I just bought YAMAHA YHT 299. I was checking for best possible sound output for this and came across a lot of information. So just need some inputs on this,

1. I read somewhere that YHT 196 can't decode Dolby audio over HDMI. Is this true for 299 as well? I will be using three things with my 299, Airtel DTH HD, a Sony BDP S1100 and my Xbox 360. Do I need to connect my DTH HD using HDMI and Optical out both to get get Dolby sound? I will have to check the same for Xbox.

2. The installation guy will probably do the initial setup for me, but is there any guide where i can find out more about individual speaker settings/frequencies and crossover?

1. Yamaha 196 is quite an old model. It supports both DTS and DD through the HDMI. IIRC, it does not support DTS HDMA and Dolby TruHD. Yamaha 299 is the latest model and it supports all kinds of decoding through hdmi. You need optical connection only if Airtel does not support DD through hdmi.

For Airtel DTH i need to connect it using optical out, so i'll probably need to set the audio input of AVR to Optical. But my Xbox and BDP will give audio through HDMI. Do i need to change settings everytime i switch from DTH to Xbox/BDP?

You should connect the devices as follows:

STB HDMI out > AVR HDMI PORT 1 (say)
STB Optical out > AVR Optical input. Assign this optical input to HDMI 1 and set to use optical audio as default otherwise hdmi audio will be used.
BDP HDMI out > AVR HDMI PORT 2
XBOX HDMI out > AVR HDMI PORT 3
AVR HDMI OUT > TV HDMI INPUT.

and select the appropriate hdmi port using the avr remote. The AVR will automatically select the audio format depending on the audio signal from the device.

You could also connect the hdmi out of stb directly to tv so that avr can be avoided if you don't want to leave it ON always.

Is it advisable to set the speaker distances on AVR to actual values or let the YPAO decide that? Cause probably it wont matter for Front, Surround and Center, but for sub there will a lag in processing and YPAO accounts for that when setting the distances. Any thoughts?

Use passthrough feature to use your TV output for regular viewing than HT.
kepp the AVR on standby mode

For TV, better connect DTH to TV using HDMI and connect audio using optical out to AVR, that way when u dont want to use AVR just switch it off and listen with TV audio on.

SCENE modes in YAMAHA AVR (YHT 299)

The AVR remote has 4 scene modes, BD, TV, CD and FM. The other day I was having an issue with this. Whenever I pressed BD the AVR would display Game (HDMI 2). So pressing CD and BD both were taking me to Game (configured on HDMI 2). My Blu ray is connected to HDMI 1.
I tried searching the manual but couldn't find how to assign HDMI inputs to these Scene buttons. The I found a youtube video explaining the same. For those intereseted here is how you do it,

Select the Scene, e.g. BD. Then select all the settings you want to apply for this scene.
e.g. Select HDMI input, select AV input if any. The set sound modes/enhancer/ARC settings if you want to apply any. The long press the Scene button on AVR. It then displays "Set Complete". This basically assigns all your preferred settings to a selected scene. So whenever you switch between scenes all the configured settings get applied for that specific scene and you don't have to everytime adjust these settings after switching from BD to TV or any other scene.

You can configure these buttons.
e.g.- set your BD player and dsp and other settings as you regularly want to have then press and hold "BD" mode button on the front of AVR, it will save the current setting as BD. Similarly for others.

Does this model support standby passthrough so we can use the audio/video on TV without switching the AVR on? If so how do we configure this?

I have got a pair of old bookshelf speakers which was with an Aiwa music system. 6 Ohm, 30Watts and the sound quality was awesome. I was wondereing, whether I can connect these speakers as the front Left and Right speakers of YHT -299 replacing the original small ones ? Will it make any problem to the receiver or other speakers ?

Hi, I have two questions if someone can answer them for me please.

1. I stay in Gurgaon where power cuts and voltage fluctuations are very prominent. Do I need to use voltage stabiliser for my YHT-299 ?
2. Whenever I switch-on my home theatre, the it shows the default source as AV4 whereas I would want it to use HDMI1, is there a way to set this setting ?

Many thanks in advance.
