Folks,

I'm considering a Technics SL1200/1210 GR2. But there are no official channels in India. No good feedback about grey market dealer Revolver Club which is advertising a ridiculous price.

Is it OK to hand carry from abroad? In terms of customs, etc.

Else I may consider the new Denon DP 3000NE, Rega 6 or similar range MoFi as they have distribution channels.

What's your advice?

TIA

3.5 lacs gets you a Dr Feickert Volare with an origin live tonearm which will destroy everything you are considering.

Add these to your list of research before finalising

1. VPI prime scout
2. Acoustic solid classic wood
3. EAT C-major
With some discounts and they might just fall under your mentioned budget.

EDIT: the budget for phono is seperate?

There was one Great Turntable of Technics Limited Edition by @essrand on sale in HFV classifieds, few months ago, I don't remember it getting sold, its a collectors edition as far as I remember.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have a Musical Fidelity phono stage and AT VM540ML & Nagaoka MP110 cartilages mounted on respective headshells. They are doing duty for last 5 years on a simple Denon DP400 table. The mods have totally changed the sound.

Planning to get a Shibata stylus for the AT cartridge and an MC cartridge in near future. Phono stage upgrade to be planned after seeing the results.
I have about 100 vinyls as heirloom and another 400 that I bought. But not planning to buy more in near future.

I'm not looking at any pre-owned items.

Also little wary of esoteric products as I simply have no time to run around for support/service if anything goes wrong. Hence looking for mainstream brands.

I once hand carried a Garrad 401 from the UK back in 2009. Was travelling business class and not a question apart from those odd stares :). Passed Indian Customs at Bangalore with no questions. Not sure how it is today though.
Thanks.
I've also hand carried amplifier, CD player and many scores of vinyls. Never a problem.
Just removed the boxes of the electronics, wrapped in clothes and put inside the suitcase. Nobody asked anything. But with turntable I doubt I can carry without box.

Both are looking very promising 👌
Let me explore.

Kuzma Stabi S + Kuzma 4point 9 can be bought preowned around your budget.

This is what Fulton Musical Industries use to believe about Shibata and Elliptical stylus. You may reconsider buying

Very interesting.
Though some of the technicalities escaped my understanding, I could get the underlying theme.
I'm not hung up on Shibata per se. Just that for AT VM5x0 series, it's easy to change the stylii and move up in line.
It greatly depends on the vinyl as well, I guess. For older vinyls, my lowly Nag MP110 with conical stylus is better.
The decision regarding cart/stylus will come after that table.

The first thing that hit me as I started looking at the models, is that mark up in Indian market is sometimes as high as 100%.
Atrocious 😡

I don't have a lot of experience with modern turntables but have extensively auditioned a few of the usual suspects. Rega P6, Technics 1200 GR2, VPI Scout 21. I would say each has its own approach to giving a fairly good insight into the sound in those grooves. You really need to listen and decide. Or you can read up reviews to get an understanding of how these play differently. My experience is that Rega is very good at entry to mid levels. P6 is the overall sweet spot in their line. I liked it for its overall performance with all types of music. The VPI Scout 21 was about 15 % better overall and played classical music better but at almost 40 % more outlay. The technics 1200 GR2 was on par with Rega P6 but I ended up liking the Rega better for my music. Another listener may like the technics better.

If you can go up the line, there are a lot of other brands that do it better. The MOFI decks are also really nice.

I picked up the Rega P6 to get a feel of the landscape since I am getting back into LPs after 2 decades. Loving it. But listen to peeps who have been doing this for a while :)
