Advice for 46''/47'' TV

Hi All,
Been reading some of the threads, very informative. Need to read more about WD TV player also, seems interesting.

Planning to buy a 46/47'' LCD/Plasma.

Constraints:
- Have a fairly bright room with good sunlight due to balconies etc.
- Viewing distance 10-13 feet.
- Max 70K Budget
- Poor availability of 47'' models in bangalore ((

I could find only the LG 47LH50YR and Samsung 46B530. The LG has much better specs. Both are at same cost, around 65-67K. Read good stuff about LG 47LH90 in the threads, but I guess it will be more expensive.

Not sure if i should go for Plasma, since I hear they have issues in bright rooms. Panasonic G10 looks great in showroom, even with TataSky, but read about the Panasonic "black" issues.

Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks in advance !

I read lot of good things about Plasmas in this forum, and went through the LG PQ60 vs B450 thread. Realized that dont have a window opposite my TV, so maybe plasma can be considered. Checked out 50'' B450 today, seems pretty good (of course, brightness of images is less compared to LCDs).

So my question now is, is there some way to check, or some thumb rule, so that i know I wont have glare issues due to ambient light, with a Plasma ?

Yup, and i would prefer to keep it <= 70K

Comparing LH70YR and LH50YR, i felt specs are better for 50YR. Only advantage of 70YR seems to be Bluetooth, and I dont intend to use that. Dont see the point of spending additional 7K for that.

Yea specs are almost same, but AFA I remember 50YR does not have the option to turn off that god awfull 200Hz true motion technology which was a complete let down for me (details in my review). and a deal breaker as well. Just a point of concern make sure you play a movie with true motion ON and see if you are ok with it. Rest its a really good LCD.

Also I found the bluetooth technology to be very handy.......we all keep taking pics through our mobile and the fastest way is to view it on my 47" is through BT. Also the sound of LH70 was better than LH50, few points but the main reason for me was the True Motion thingiii.

Lastly the esthatics of LH70 were far better then LH50.....

Btw, I have a Wii - How is the game mode and 100 Hz for gaming ? I did read your review and it said TruMotion is good for gaming. Is it a better experience that CRT TVs ?

200 Hz is the refresh rate of a Television and TruMotion is a software processor that is supposed to provide a "smoothening" effect and/or reduce judder. The likes of Samsung & Sony provide an option to switch off motion flow processing alone, but LG does not. However the refresh rate cannot be "switched off" in any TV, but then I may be wrong!

Having said that, please do check (in this forum and avsforum) with other owners of LH50 / LH70 series owners for Lip sync / HDMI connection time outs / DLNA media access / 1080 & 24 FPS rendering issues. These issues may not be relevant for sets purchased in India (since LG assembles the sets in India) however a lot of LH50/70 series owners have reported these issues in avsforums. It was the reason I decided against buying 47LH70 and bought a Sony KLV-46EX500 instead. Besides, the Sony worked out to be cheaper for me since I purchased it in Dubai.

So, price-wise, LH70 will surely be within your budget (<70k) if you shop around looking for competitive prices across dealers.
Between, LH50 & LH70 the LH70, according to me has noticeably better PQ.

LH70 i.e my LCD has the option to turn True Motion Off. Also I have been using my LCD extensively since my purchace for movies and gaming both and I have not found a single or slightest of any sort of lip sync, neither that HDMI connection time out. DLNA is a samsung technology so I am not sure about that.

Just look around for the 47" LH90..
You might find it if you are lucky or if LG resumed production now..
Odds are low but give it a try..

It might be slightly costlier at 77k but well worth it..

DLNA is not Samsung technology. It is a vendor agnostic alliance which certifies devices as being capable of sharing & streaming media through wireless network using the standards laid down by them. And you're right again, LH50 & LH70 series do not support DLNA where-as most of the Samsung models do.

Well yes LG LCDs that have 200Hz as refresh rate has the option to just High and Low where as mine has option of high, low and Off.

Thats what I meant actually, DLNA is not Samsung Proprietary, but their LCDs use it, I should have phrased the statement correctly.

200 Hz is not actual refresh rate. It is simulated by inserting frames to make motion appear smoother.

Maybe in LCDs yea but in CTRs this is the actuall refresh rate....and maybe that is the reason this tech looks bad on LCDs and pretty OK on CRTs.

and BTW I am saying this as I also have a 29" Philips 720p CRT with 100Hz refresh rate.

Yes in CRT, screen is actually repainted 100 times every second (in case of 100 Hz CRT).

Well, like I posted in other thread, i decided to drop Plasmas. Checked out the Samsung 50B450 and LG 50PQ60, but the Samsung/LG LCDs seemed to be bit better in PQ (mainly due to image sharpness, even at 12-13 feet).

So now it's back to deciding between LH35/50/70. LH90 isnt made in 47 inches. Samsung 530/550 have similar specs to LH35, and PQ is very similar (some difference in colour, samsung seems to have stronger reds). But they're priced 10K more so not interested in them. So, still trying to decide between the three LG models. If LH50 doesnt have option to turn TruMotion 200Hz off, will drop it.

Main issue right now is that all three models are hardly available in 47''. Some stores say LG has stopped making LH50, dont know for sure if it's true.

Well, LG 47'' TVs are just not available and IPL is slipping by, so re-considering the Samsung 46B530 LCD. Might be able to get it for around 60K. Any feedback on how is this model ?

Also, are there any FHD 47'' - 50'' plasmas for around 65-70K ?

I didnt like the sharpness (pixels seem to be too large) of the 50B450 plasma, but maybe FHD ones will do better on that aspect.

I have checked today in two show rooms regarding option to turn off 200Hz True Motion in LH50. I confirm that this option is available in LH50 TV sets. I found three settings - High, Low & Off.
