Friends,

I am about to finalize LG BD550, any second thoughts ? my need is

1. Should be capable of playing from 1TB Hard disk.(NTFS) , Don't have files greater than 4GB.
2. Ethernet connectivity (WIFI will not harm though) to watch/browse net.
3. I Have LG 42" LED + Denon 1910 + Jamo s606, can increase budget if there is strong point about upcoming features.
4. Most of the time I watch BIGFLICKS DVD (8GB) , Will buying DVD player be a good idea ?( Going for BD player as thats what trend is )

regards
Anil

Better option would be to go for a Media Player like WD Live, Popcorn etc.. I have the BD550 but it is of not much use as it can play only Region C Blu-ray discs and ofcourse region free discs and there is no modding available. It can however upscale DVD's and also has ethernet connectivity and USB connectivity. It did play NTFS format after software update. The other plus point is the price which it is availabe for less than 6K now. However, it would be better to buy a BD player which can be modded easily like Panasonic.

Yep, as Mathan told go for some media player like Asus/xtreamer/WDTV for playing thru Hard disks which will play all varieties of media files and go for an budgeted BD player ( region free).. In sale section, Our Member Vinod has put up for sale of his new Sherwood BD player which will play all region BD's and DVD's.

Regards

If you are hellbent on a bluray player nothing offers better value than sony bdp-s370 for about 9k, but my question is, why on earth would you want a bluray player. I have a sony ps3 which is a gaming console, a linux pc, a cd player, a media hub etc etc but I seldom use the blu ray facility except when the kids play games on it. How many bluray movie titles can you buy/rent? If the answer is - MANY, then buy the sony. If the answer is HARDLY/NOT MANY, then buy a zinwell media player or the like as suggested above and if the answer is DONT KNOW then buy a second hand sony ps3 phat 80 gb version which is linux capable, none of the slim versions are.

Go for Sherwood BDP-5004. However note that prices keep falling & increasing based on availability of stocks [I got mine for Rs 9400/- inclusive of 2000/- customs duties].

HD dvd format by toshiba is dead bluray by sony is dying IMHO only ps3 gaming has kept it alive. media-centers killing it like cassette tape killed lp. then cd killed cassette and lp, then mp3 killed cd, then cheap hard disks killed mp3 etc etc

It is true that HDDVD is dead. But, i dont think bluray is dying. Actually it is the time of bluray discs now. Also your opinion of mp3 killed cd is not acceptable. It is true that people opt for mp3 instead of audio cds. But remember without ACD there is no mp3.

First of all Blu-Ray is not by Sony. It was invented by a group of companies in which Sony was also a participant. And dead? It has just taken birth, for heavens sake !!!

Cheers

Well i believe people say this because the first blu ray player was launched by Sony and the first blu ray disc was again shown by Sony in 2000.

From wiki
"Sony started two projects applying the new diodes: UDO (Ultra Density Optical),[6] and DVR Blue (together with Pioneer),[7] a format of rewritable discs that would eventually become Blu-ray Disc (more specifically, BD-RE). The core technologies of the formats are similar.

The first DVR Blue prototypes were unveiled at the CEATEC exhibition in October 2000 by Sony.[8] A trademark for the "Blue Disc" logo was filed February 9, 2001.[9] On February 19, 2002, the project was officially announced as Blu-ray Disc,[10][11] and Blu-ray Disc Founders was founded by the nine initial members."

But that format is very different to the current one. Firstly, discs designed for that format will not play on current BD players. Why? That's because those blu-ray discs used a caddy. The version that we're using does not. Even that was supported by Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic), Philips Electronics, Pioneer Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp, and Thomson Multimedia. It was also introduced only in Japan.

Here, take a look: Sony Shows First Blu-Ray Recorder - PCWorld

It only bears some resemblance to the Blu-ray system used today.

The first current-generation player was introduced by Samsung and not by Sony. :)

I believe that caddy was the fancy cover by Sony blu ray R disc.

Yes the standards was changed but it is still the worlds first blu ray player.
