LG BD550 file format issue

Hi All,

I purchased LG BD550 to play Blu-Ray disk and other HD movie files from hard drive. The device plays Blu-Rays exceptionally well but had faced issues while playing SOME mkv and mp4 files. I receive "file format not supported message" while trying to play the files. It's not that I face the issue with all mkv and mp4 files, but with some of them. Those files are easily played by the PS3 and my laptop's VLC player.

To overcome the problem I tried to install the latest firmware and followed the procedure mentioned in the manual. It didn't work with USB. I'm not sure if I'm missing something. If anyone in this forum has already done it please guide me.

Hi

I have the same player and the same issue. Hence built a htpc for the same. This player does not support some of the audio/video codecs which are embedded while the mkv/mp4 video files are encoded. I am not sure whether any recent firmware update has removed this problem but the issue still exists. You need to convert these files to the right format using anydvd or makemkv softwares to play with this bluray player using usb.

Hi

HTPC is nothing but Home Theater PC. You can refer to this section in the forum and especially read the thread from Sam9s. You can source the individual components and build the system from scratch with a superb experience or you can purchase the stand alone hd media players like wdtv, asus, himedia etc., at lesser cost compared to htpc. I did refer to Sam9s thread and got inspired and built my htpc and enjoining every bit of the hd movies and audio experience.

You can download the anydvd converter software from the internet and I believe its a freeware.

The playback problem may be due to the mkv header compression. Download mkvtoolnix v3.0 or lower and remux the mkv and mp4 files. The conversion is very fast -just one or two minute.

I have found one solution for the format issue. After checking the the properties of the playable mkv and non-playable mkvs it seems the Level profile of the video is responsible for the problem.

All playable mkv had video profile [email protected], whereas the ones which don't work has [email protected].

I re-encoded the files using mediaencoder software to Level [email protected] and played though LG BD550.

I am curious what is your experience with mkvs that have DTS HD MA or Tru HD audio?

Never tried the procedure with HD(lossless) codecs. I think it will work because there is an option in the encoder that can simply copy the audio stream without looking at the content.

I chose the copy audio option for the Dolby Digital Plus audio in mkv since I had to re-encode the video part only.

You have diffrent tabs and controls to handle audio and video encoding.

If you ever try with the lossless formats please let us know the result - and I don't mean encoding. One way to test would be to pick up a small sample file from the net with these audios and check. Thanks for your effort.
