I want to connect set top box (non HD) to Yamaha 371 (Via Analog in) and then the sound to TV (through anlog output) and also to Speakers through the speaker terminals.
The question, for the sound to be passed on to the TV, the AVR needs to be on switched on. In the manual, there is a mention of Standby mode, but it seems there is none in actual. Am I missing anything?

How do you guys connect the STB to AVR to TV without using the AVR in 'full power (read electricity consumption) mode'?

When you connect the 371 to the mains, it is in "Standby." If you press the button on the front upper left, the receiver turns "on." Press it again it goes back to "standby."

In standby the unit consumes enough electricity to keep the remote receiver working, so if you push the button on the remote control, the unit turns on. In the standby mode no signals pass through the receiver.

If you want to save electricity, you must yank the plug from the wall, which you should do during an electrical storm anyhow.

I am not sure why you want to send the signal through the TV speakers. Send the audio from the STB to the receiver and let the receiver drive the speakers. Leave the TV speakers off, they are tiny to start with, and will not properly calibrate the sound field on the 371. You have an excellent receiver, let it handle the sound. Does the STB have a coaxial or optical sound output? You should connect it to the 371 and enjoy 5.1 sound. I assume the STB has no HDMI, but if the TV and BluRay player have it, let the 371 direct the signals.

By STB > AVR > TV, I wanted to pass the STB audio to HT speakers for movies on SD channels. For 'saas bahu' serials I dont want to bother the AVR, neither do I want to burn additional 240w of electricity (6-8 hrs a day) by passing the audio thru AVR. I dont want to calibrate the sound in TV speakers thru AVR. Just plain pass thru of sound to TV speakers using analog out (not speaker terminal) of AVR. Seems I need to get a RCA switch.

Hi,is your STB having 2 audio out(analog)?
OR your TV has AV out?In both cases, its possible to get audio from both.I have connected AVR to AV out of TV & so I need not have to keep AVR in standby, even on all the time.
Also connected Optical as its HD box.

Option 1 - connect stb audio to tv and tv audio out to avr.

Option 2 - use two Y splitter to split the stb audio out one for each channel.

Tried the TV audio out option but it seems the TV Audio out jack does not work. Didn't bother to test it while purchasing it three years back.
Last night (rather morning 3 o'clock) I was so irritate with this, that I made a female RCA to female RCA connector. Female RCA jack (non gold plated) was lying since quite sometime. I will change the connections using the female RCA jacks to send the sound signal to AVR. There is no switch to make it further easy, but thats ok. The connectors are on the TV stands so it easy to change rather then fight with connectors in the rear panel.

I will see if I can find a good Y splitter. This should do the trick, without changing it everytime I want to connect STB to AVR.

Thank you guys for flow of suggestions!

I have a strange issue with HTR-3064 which is essentially the same as 371. The DSP modes are not working for me. If I use 5 ch stereo i can hear my surround speakers loud and clear. Hence i am ruling out issues with speakers.

But for all other DSP modes and surround modes like Prologic etc. I can not hear anything from the surround speakers. I tried stereo from my laptop and Videocon D2h. The surround speakers do make some substandard sound, but to hear that i need to literally place my ears into the speakers and is not audible at 5 inches away.

My feeling is the AVR is damaged or the DSP chip is not working.

Any insights into any other reasons behind this scenario or the further course of action?

I don't think that its an issue with AVR or DSP chips..

Logically when you are using 5 ch stereo then amp is doing nothing but passing same signal to all the speakers so the signal strength for all channels is same..

Now when you are using DSP effects then stereo signal is being processed for 5 channels.. so there might be difference in signal strength as AVR still focus on front and centre channel.. personally I never liked the DSP effects for stereo..

Try to increase the volume for rear speakers and then listen.. optimize volume level for 5 channel stereo and DSP..

There is no problem with your AVR. When using DSPs like Dolby Prologic, DTS Neo6 etc. the rear speakers are always at a low volume. While watching TV channels, usually you will hear sound through the center speaker only. This is my experience with Denon 1612. With Multichannel stereo, I can hear sound in all speakers.

For me the rear speakers are absolutely not audible. The sound i hear while i keep my ear extremely close to the speakers are less louder than the sound you hear a meter away from an ear phone. And the quality of the sound also is bad, i can't even say it is sound ... more like some noise ...

Will try adjusting the volumes levels of the speakers, but to me the problem looks something else ... like either the DSP is not able to work with the source or not working at all etc.

Your AVR is fine. What is explained above is pretty much the issue. Adding to that, the DSP on stereo format music/movie will throw sound to rear channels occasionally. There is a weird logic applied to split the sound when there is a 'ambience' in the scene (not necessarily only for ambiance). Or certain frequency is playing. Please dont ask me how the logic works. But if you play some 'adventure' movie then you can make it out clearly that the sound is rolling to the rears intermitently. On all other occassions there is a low quality whispering sound.

Hello everyone. I am both new to the forum and new
to the Yamaha A/V RX V371. I have 2 question.
1. My Yamaha is connected to a Sharp Aquos LED TV. When
I channel the Direct TV HDMI output into the TV first, and then
the Yamaha, the resulting sound (with the TV speaker on)
is dys-synchronous. If I channel the signal directly into the Yamaha
first (turning the HDMI Return feature on), the TV speaker
is muted. I would like the option to enable the TV speaker
while still using the HDMI signaling capabilities of both devices.

2. Where can I plug my wireless headphone? I've tried all
the audio outputs on the Yamaha and ... nothing.

Thanks in advance for your patience.

Problem with my V371 - Need help!
From yesterday night, suddenly I am not getting any signal in my TV through normal route, i.e. HD player --HDMI---> AVR --HDMI---> TV
I think I messed up some HDMI settings on my AVR. Please consider the following -
1) I connected my HD player directly to my TV via HDMI -- both audio/video were coming properly
2) When I connected HD player to AVR -- Audio was coming properly from the speakers.
3)Then when I connected HD player to AVR and AVR to TV -- Sound was coming from speakers but TV says "No signal"

Any help, please?

Koushik,
I suspect your AVR's HDMI out. Did you try to disconnect/connect hdmi cable when things (TV, AVR etc) are switched on?
I am asking this because it may not be a safe practice to use HDMI that way

The first thing that goes faulty in AVRs is the hdmi board. I recently serviced my Denon 1612 because of faulty hdmi board. How did you reset the avr?
