I've mentioned in other posts that I am on the lookout for a DAC. I've been given some great suggestions by forum members so far. However I was wondering if there are others like me who would like the upcoming OPPO BDP 105 which is a great Blue Ray player that comes with what looks like a capable DAC included.

OPPO BDP-105 Blu-ray Disc Player

The DAC used in the BDP 105 is the SABRE 32 Reference ES9018 from ESS Technology. The specs on the Oppo site has all the details on the DAC.

Does Oppo allow direct sales to India? Is there a dealer in India. I've signed up to be notified when its released. Wouldn't mind picking it up at $1200 plus duties if its indeed going to be comparable to the DACs I've looked at up until now. The added bonus is a kickass Blue Ray player.

DACs that I have been looking at with some interest so far:
Acoustic Portrait Thiyaga DAC
M2Tech Young
Schiit Bifrost
Grant Fidelity TubeDAC-11

There is a lot more to a dac than the chip alone. The fact that there are special edition/modded versions of nuforce players suggests that despite the dac chip, the players are still not up to the mark for pure two channel use.

If you are looking for a blu ray player that does decent audio, this is ok. If your primary purpose is two channel audio, you can probably do better at the price point.

Thanks Jai. My setup is a 2 channel stereo.

Nikhil, I would strongly recommend the Metrum Octave

Thanks Prem. I was talking about the Octave with square_wave yesterday but I have to read up on it. I have the 6moons review bookmarked. Looks like I need to move it up on my list based on your recommendations.

This is for true for BDP-93 only. AFAIK, Nuforce themselves had declared that no enhancements were required for BDP-95 for 2-channel use.
No clue for the latest BDP-105 though.

Here's some info from Audioholics.com in an interview with Nathaniel Plain (Manager of Technical Services) of Oppo Digital.

Oppo BDP-103 & BDP-105 Blu-ray Q&A Interview — Reviews and News from Audioholics

Q: What improvements in analog audio and overall performance do the new BDP103/105 have over the models they replace?

A: At OPPO, we understand that customers appreciate great audio performance for both home theater and music listening. While many mass market Blu-ray Disc players are now built with an overly simplified stereo analog output in order to reduce cost, we still build the BDP-103 and BDP-105 with significant investment in the analog audio section. For the BDP-103, we hired the designer of one of the popular BDP-93 aftermarket modifications to help us improve its analog audio. The new design has a warmer, more open and lively sound comparing to the BDP-93. This is achieved by a novel configuration of the DAC chip and a new analog buffer and filter stage following the DAC output. The same designer also contributed to the BDP-105s analog audio section. The BDP-105 retains the BDP-95s very detailed and accurate sound, and the performance measurements are almost identical to the BDP-95. In order to maintain the extremely high performance of the BDP-95 while adding new audio features including the headphone amplifier and the USB DAC input, we utilize two separate boards for the multi-channel and stereo sections. This results in increased cost and manufacturing complexity, but enables us to better route the signals, power and ground so we can ensure a high level of performance.

In terms of overall performance, the new BDP-103 and BDP-105 use a new custom dual-core SoC (System-on-Chip) processor. The startup time and disc loading speed are both improved over the previous generation. The more powerful processor also enables us to give the player an enhanced user interface for CD and media file playback. Navigation is snappier than before and users can access cover art and additional media information such as track title, artist, genre and more.

I am on their pre-list and have got the first shot at purchasing the 105.
Having a hard time staying away from clicking on the link and pulling the trigger.

LOL! That makes two of us. I've been eagerly awaiting too. I'm visiting US early next year... hopefully then.

Hey Nikhil,

I am in the same dilemma :). I recently got BDP-93 thinking that I will add a DAC to it later. Now that Oppo 105 has come up with built in DAC, I am confused whether to sell Oppo-93 and get a brand new Oppo 105. For me built in DAC reduces the number of connections, which I feel could make some difference.

However, I have been closely watching the anticipation thread on different forums and seems like there has been some design goof-ups that are made by Oppo. However Oppo is defending the new design saying that the 2 channel audio is indeed marginally better than 95. However I confirmed with Oppo that they are using the same transport as in Oppo 93 and 95 in 103 and 105.

Other option for me is to keep the Oppo 93 and complement it with WYRED 4 SOUND DAC2. Many people are saying that this combination might sound much better than stock Oppo DAC and analog section in 95 or 105.

I am still waiting for some solid reviews before I pull the plug for 105 :). I got little concerned with the "design glitches" in Oppo 105. Otherwise its going to be Oppo 93 + W4S DAC2 for me.

BTW, this is the forum that talks about design changes in Oppo 105 compared to 93 - Oppo`s BDP105 - discussions, upgrading, mods... - diyAudio

I would not suggest Oppo take the place of a DAC. There are lots of good options around $1000 range for tube and SS. The standalone DACs performed much better than modded Oppo 95 in my auditions.

So am i. but they ain't shipping it worldwide yet. Let's see what the reviews have to say.

Can you please share the cost break up? i.e cost of item + shipping + custom

Its almost a year back.
Cost of Oppo - $600
Fedex shipping - $87.50
Customs - 9000+ ( I don't remember the exact amount).

I made a mistake by not contacting them while placing the order.
You can ask them to quote the price as $499 (with out region unlock).
Then customs will be less. There will be discounts coming up on the site. so you have to keep a watch.

IMO, BDP 105 is the way to go and incidentally I was checking their website to use BDP 105 as my pre-amp. It looks quite capable.

I had bought Tube DAC -11, given all the hype. The transformer hums like crazy and the SQ is alright. No great shakes as the reviewers say. Couldn't live with transformer sound and the manufacturer says that he might repair it but put a caveat that I need to take care of shipping charges (both ways) and the transformer noise that I faced might be a standard affair at the price bracket at which they were selling.
Sold it at half price in three weeks of purchase.
