Oppo BDP 105

Is the US Oppo 105 region free for Blu ray as well as DVDs?

Edit: I found out that the Oppo 105 ships as Region 1 for DVD and Region A for Blu Ray.

If I wanted to use this machine as my only disc spinner (CD, DVD, Bly Ray) would it make sense?

We rent most DVDs from the local (Mumbai) library but occasionally my wife will buy a few from local stores.

Navin, in the past the OPPO players have generally kept the DVD as region free, however the Blu Ray is locked to region A. The good news is that most of the Blu Ray Discs sold in India is region free and can play on any Blu Ray player.

This is the message Oppo sent me

To answer your questions:

1) Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions that we must follow...our players are not region-free but strictly DVD Region 1 and Blu-ray Region A.

2) We can ship out immediately (from Mountain View, CA) with delivery to most CA addresses within 1-2 business days.

3) The warranty is only valid in North America, and there is no service center in India.

Given the risk associated with the Oppo 105 and limited use if it cannot be modified to accept all regions would not a CD + Blu Ray player combo not replace it. If the 105 sells for $1400 with tax one could get a combo like the Marantz's KI Pearl Lite and UD5005 for the same outlay.

oppo is indeed too expensive. but it can replace a lot of stuff in your rack. finally I am thinking of moving my appletv out of my rack as bdp 95 has got a little better with its android remote. now browsing music is not that tough. it isnt even close to apple tv but it would work. If I had 105 I cud have kept apple tv and used its dac.

in fact I am even considering getting rid of my stereo amp as my avr too sounds great for stereo. I have created several presets for music - PURE direct with al crossover and dsp turned off, with sub, etc. I will do the comparisons over coming few weeks. then I will compare dacs of avr and oppo and maybe oppo too can go away and a bdp + appletv will remain.
