Hi there,

Which speakers for stereo system is better Tannoy Definition DC10T or Dynaudion S5.4?

Looks like Charakteristic is better for Tannoy, but how about real sounds of these two speakers, which is better?

Contour s5.4 any day of the week. The real tannoys are the ones from the prestige series - Turnberry and beyond.

Also please do be aware that Tannoy and Dyns have very different presentation.

thanks for the advices. Also what current market price for Dyns? Also which amplifier would be best for the Dyns? Should I buy Subwoofer too?

Hello All,
New to the forum and was hoping I could get some input on the Dynaudio's
Namely, the DM 2/7's. Starting a new Home theatre system and want to begin with speakers.

Currently using a Denon Avr -888 surround receiver for processing.
Also have a Denon DVD-2930 universal player for DVD-a and SACDs
Humble beginnings I know, but will improve as I go along.

Using Polk rti'6's as fronts. Have very little HiFi capability IMHO.
Polk 100W sub ( not bad, I must say for a budget sub)
Surrounds are JBL's 50's barely cut it.
I have a nice Aperion Audio center 533 vac which provides good diolouge for film. But, I don't want to go the Aperion route. I hear the new models have no air, and soundstage doesn't go beyond the speaker grills. I would like to get better than that.

Your comments and thoughts are welcomed

Exactly Tannoy and Dyn are very different animals. I have heard the DC10T and they were dynamic and big (in sound). I did no find them brash and would be happy to live with them. The Cabinet work was also superb.

Dyn's on the other hand (as mentioned earlier) will shine once you have 200W or so on tap. I have not heard the 5.4 but other Dyns I have heard (I have also DIYed using Dyn drivers in the late 80s) are a tad laid back.

Both are musical as are B&W 803D, Focal Electra 1038, etc. At this price range I would strongly suggest you to listen to at least 3 speakers before making a purchase.

I also was reviewing Wharfedale Jades series speakers and liked that too. The dealer for the Dyn S5.4 offered "Exposure 2010SII DAC" ampliffier.
Me as a music listen likes good quality basses, if I don't like the bass of the speakers for any music, I will not buy that speakers at all, but the bass must be balance and soft if need with lively middle and high sound too.

Also when you says "different animals". What exactly you mean? Differents of what?

The Tannnoys are move lively than the Dyns I have heard (keep in mind I have NOT heard the 5.4). They also can bite if the recording allows it (very common in old poorly recorded brass music from the 70s).

The Dyns are mare laid back but they require a lot more power to "get moving".

I understand you are looking at purely a stereo sound but just for arguments sake I would that if I wanted the system to double for HT as well as stereo I would take the Tannoys. If however I had a pair of nice mono blocks that and swing volts and dump amps I would take the Dyns.

That said there are many other options at this price range ($10,000+/- 1000) including the big brands like B&W, Focal, KEF etc to smaller brands like Von Schweikert (VR5), PMC (PB1i) etc.

I would listen to at least 3, maybe more before I make any decision.

I like listen to music on driven. People in other forums mentioned that Dyn on shows mainly plays with Chord amplifier and said that yes need powerful amplifier but on driven Tannoys sounds bad and really much harder to find correct amplifier than for Dyns. Which monoblocks you have in minds?
