Videocon D2H initial impressions

Hi Biju,

I am using D2H service. whenever i switch channel i can hear a noise from woofer of 3400. Any idea what should i do to avoid this.

Yesterday got D2H installed and finally said TA-TA to TS. Happy so far, though yet to go around with all the details. Hope to catch more of the new set up in the coming weekend.

Initial impression is that the PQ is a bit lower in D2H than TS, but not that much. I will experience more of the D2H before concluding this aspect. I think at 7K with 1 year subscription this is a good option with 22 HD channels. Though only a month or so back they were giving at around 5600.

TS Call Centre is now bad, D2H is pathetic. Anyway I had a wrong set top box (SD) installed instead HD. I found it tough to put across and convince them that they had installed the worng item. Anyway they changed within few hours, that is commendable, considering the quality of Call Centre people.

Shifted from my Airtel HD to Videocon HD with external recording yesterday- after my Airtel HD box stopped working.

First the positives:
1) Videocon has a wider range of channels and I think at lower rates compared to Airtel
2) GUI is better then Airtel. ( Cant comment on recording GUI as I did not have it on Airtel)
3) Installation was fast - booked in the morning and got it by evening in Hyderabad

The negative and I feel its a big negative.

1) The picture quality is inferior to Airtel - you can feel the difference immediately when you watch the true HD channels like Ten sports, NGC etc. The colors are washed out and the picture is not sharp.

Some of the Hindi HD channels look like upscaled versions of SD channels.
Other problems:
2) The set top box default settings do not out put Digital Dollby automatically. The set up is hidden behind secret codes which were not explained during installation . Finally got around the secret codes and had to select Audio to Auto to get DD.

So all in all if you are looking at maximising the number of channels go for Videocon, if PQ is very important on your large screen then Airtel is better.

May be this is not the right thread for this...

Whether any other new set-top box will be launching by videocon that has IR remote...coz the current RF remote cannot be configured to my Logitech Harmony Remote 720..I dont want to use 2 remotes :) :)

Hey guys,

Very keen on getting a HD-DVR.

@baiju: Seems you got the cheaper Vid D2H-HD, which has limited DVR functionality with only 1 channel viewable/recordable at a time? Hows the performance (has it rained in the last month in Kochi?) especially during rains/etc?

@rjames123: it seems you got the new internal DVR model. How has your experience been, since you've been using it for a month? Can you confirm usability of the recording? Series recording, names of recordings, speed of gui, etc?

@dino: I've been seeing your inputs across threads, I gather from other DVR power users (which I will certainly be), pre-recording for 5-10 minutes from the actual showtime is the norm, since sometimes shows can start a few minutes early, the recorded programme name getting affected and being unsearchable is an unacceptable error. TS+ handles this without a problem (seen at a cousins place)

@Deeceeds: Which option did you finally choose?

@Manzb: At 7k, you got the DVR? How has the weekend experience been? :) :) :ohyeah:

Saw on Vid website, only 200 hrs recordable, even with a 1 TB HDD? Others say ~750 hrs of recording with 500 GB HDDs..? Anyone have any view on this?

Currently based in Mumbai, suffering from Hathway's (non-HD) whimsical nature (Star sports 2 is suddenly missing) and non-existent CC. (Local providers outlet, when I asked for an email id of a higher-up, offered me www.hathway.in sigh )

Thanks for your inputs.. :)

Sorry i haven't used recording feature yet.

The HD box is basic one and it has recording through the usb port. Only one channel can be recorded at a time. You can watch another channel during recording but for some channels you have to stop recording. Rain affects the signal, it is completely lost when it begins to rain. However it was the same case with my reliance hd and tata sky. As to the question 'has it rained in the last month in Kochi?', it was record rain in all over Kerala this monsoon.:D

There are two types of DVRs the cheaper one 2222 needs external storage and you can watch some channels while recording. couldnt figure out why only some channels can be viewed while recording is on. Is it something to do with transponder?

Ok here is irritating part about the recorded file. BTW no problem in file naming observed by me unlike the reports from other FMs

1) the recording does not skip advts!
2) I am unable to FF or rewind or pause. None of the remote keys as per manual work. Only play back is possible

I am yet to raise this to customer support

Thanks all! @jagdish_p, from what I've seen of TS+ (non-HD), doesn't skip advts, but you can easily fast-forward and skip them...
Main reason I've stopped watching most tv/movies on tv, is that I can't stand the ad-breaks..

I wonder whether the internal storage DVR has these issues..

Select remote type as ''RCU'' in PVR Settings menu of the stb , after that arrow keys will work as play , pause, rewind, fast forward

Thanks for the tip.
The exact sequence of setup is (for 2222 model):

Setup--> Installation>1234(code)-->Box Settings-->TV Settings-->RCU type -->Select Compact

Incidentally when I called up support the executive consulted his senior and came up with the same solution -- took about 3 to 4 mts.

So I will rate the Customer care is OK

Had a light shower and the signal got cut.
Airtel signal was much stronger and used get cut only during heavy rains.

So it's negative marks for d2h on this count

In my location only heavy rains disrupt VD2H signal.
One question.......anybody able to assign channels 81 to 100 for favourite channels? Just couldn't see how it can be done or is it even possible?
Also the remote is good except for the channel and volume changing buttons which are not too responsive. All the presses don't register and have to be pressed two or three times. Customer care changed the remote but same problem persists.

I also have problems with the channel and volume controls. Sometimes a single channel press will skip two channels. The volume button also needs two three presses to start functioning.

Yes the problem seems to be universal. The channel and volume buttons are too stiff and require hard press.
Any idea about assigning ch. 81 to 100?

Yes I do feel the same. Channel and volume buttom has a "tick" sound for each press and sometimes I feel like it is getting stuck.
Good part is the remote is so sleek and nice looking one.

Hi, is d2h true dolby digital, have you checked with 5.1 audio, also have you checked with all the hd channels?

Anybody hearing a tick sound in the woofer when the channel is changed. The loudness of tick sound varies from channel to channel and few channels it does not sound.
