Hi Guys,

I have a doubt about my receiver.

My SONY STR DN1050 is getting heat so much. when I play any music or movies within 10 mins it is getting heat. The heat comes out heavily on the heat sink side. Some times it is from the transformer side also.

When I play dolby 5.1 or 7.1 movies then heat becomes high. Though there is no change in the audio. Audio is good only.

I have not placed the received inside any cabin, so far it is outside only.

Is this normal for all the receiver or do I need to do anything?

Or will it burn anything?

It doesn't look normal.
It can get "warm" after few hours of usage.
But 10 min is too less to get something to get heated up.

Thanks sunilkm.

What should I do for it? Do I need to give it for service?

Even if we go for service which part will be replaced?

Service guys told that this is a common thing for all the amplifiers but if you really want to check then get the receiver to the service station.

Any suggestions guys?

Thanks in advance.

I am sure many will disagree with the service guy's comment on all amplifiers will get heated up in 10min of usage.

Common thing is getting slightly heated up or warmer after hours of usage. This may vary from one amp to another.

Better to get it checked as the heat can affect the reliability of ICs and components.

Thanks sunilkm and krishnamurthy krishnamurthy for your replies.

Anyway I am going to get it for service but before I want all your comments over here.

what could be the reason for heating? especially this is new receiver. Change of capacitors or something else?

Hi, Vinoth, do not worry at all. This is normal with SONY AVR.

Even in standby also, it generates some heat. Do not keep pondering over the Heat.

NOTHING UNUSUAL.

^this, and also how old is your unit?
has it behaved like this before?
have you changed anything that might have resulted in such behavior?

Best would be to take it to a service outlet. Even a small resistor failure in the output stage brings in over-heating issues. In your case, you have reported fast build-up of heat. That is unnatural !! Suggest showing your amp to a qualified technician immediately.

Thanks Elango and blackhorn for your replies.

I am using polk tsx110 bookshelves for fronts. I set speaker output as 2.0 because i have connected only 2 speakers.

This unit is 3 weeks old only. From the beginning it produces heat.

When I play movies or music it will be low heated in the beginning, after 30 minutes it will become more heat on the heat sink side and some times it will be in the transformer side.

Some times from the HDMI board side.

Yes I have changed the transformer inside the avr which is done by sony service and they replaced the proper transformer only.

Use it like its meant to be used. Its a complex equipment and will generate heat.
My Denon generates enough heat to cook an egg. Did ever since i bough it. And its 9 years old and works like a charm.
Unless ofcourse there is smoke or you can smell something burning play away those movies.

So far I didnt feel like smokes are coming out of the receiver. I am thinking that the problem is from the step down transformer which i am using. My receiver is 240w and the SDT is 500w (Maxine). Is it because of that?

Here I have got two suggestions that ghatgepatil said that to take it for service and bigron said that this is like normal. Which one should I pick?

Thanks in advance.

Bigron....

Thanks for your reply.. I was just telling about the probability that, SDT can be a reason.

If you have anything in your mind please let me know here.

Thanks

Why would I have anything on my mind pertaining to your receivers heat issues.
We can only give options, in the end you have to take the cal.

Vinoth, how hot does the AVR get? can you touch the cabinet (not the heat sink) without much discomfort? How much space does it have all around, especially the back and top?

Right now I am watching movie with Tata Sky. So far it is light heat only. I am able to touch the panel. Its been 30 minutes now. There is no much heat now.

I placed the receiver outside the cabin only. I dont know when is it getting so hot. Unable to decide now.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
