Hello All,

one of my friend is returning from NY to India this month end and i am planning to order "BIC America PL200-ii version 2 subwoofer" from from amazon.com.
This is just a subwoofer and having dimentions - 29.5 x 31.8 x 119.4 cm (i estimate the box at least 4 inches bigger from all the sides)
Item Weight - 19.8 Kg (43.8 pounds)
He will be flying via Air France flight from JFK connecting flight from Paris to Mumbai. (Air france has total of 43 KG's allowed)

i have few questions:
1) can he bring this item with him in checked in bagage?
2) lets say if his baggage allowance is full, will he be charged for extra baggage for this box weighing 43 pounds?
3) upon arrival, what process he needs to follow to pay the customs on mumbai airport? or will he be needing to pay the customs?
4) what do you think it would cost for extra baggage of 43 pounds + customs?

Please help.

One of the FM is selling his Bic PL200 ii version which are very new. You can get them directly from him if you are interested.

Sorry Kaptan,

he has - BIC America PL200 II (dual subs) to sell but the price is very high (75 K for dual, i think 37K for 1 sub), in US 1 SUB it costs 18K as per conversion.

In India it costs 46,000 Rupees, so looking at the difference in US its costing to 18,000 rupees. this is the main reason i am looking for this specific item.
can someone please help in for my original query?

1) can he bring this item with him in checked in bagage?

Yes.

2) lets say if his baggage allowance is full, will he be charged for extra baggage for this box weighing 43 pounds?

Yes, he will be charged extra.. My friend carried Klipsch speakers from US and fairly recollect, he paid excess baggage charges..

3) upon arrival, what process he needs to follow to pay the customs on mumbai airport?

Not sure of this..

or will he be needing to pay the customs?

May be not.. Depending on his length of stay outside India, he may have higher allowance limit.. I think 55K is the allowed limit, which is for shorter duration..

4) what do you think it would cost for extra baggage of 43 pounds + customs?

You may check that airlines support team on excess baggage charges..

But guess, BIC seems to have 5 yrs warranty in India.. Have you checked India pricing? Is the difference too much compared to US price?..

Hi

Welcome to HFV.

If you have heard this sub and decided to get it, better to buy it from here...you will also have warranty....2 years on sub amp and 8 years on woofer.

As advised by Fellow Members (FMs), see the classified sections and reach out to the FM who is selling TWO BIC America PL 200 ii subs....I am sure there would be others who just want one, you can be the second buyer.

All the best!

Hi Elangoas,

thank you for your inputs, length of his stay in US is 2 weeks. and ill check with airfrance about the excess baggage amount.

Bic has the best and longest warranty support in India. I had a fault and it was replaced with door pick up and drop by fed ex for free. Better get the sub here. Yes it’s expensive compared to US just like any other electronics here

Hi Elangoas,

Excess baggage charges will apply. Weight/volume is used for calculations. It ain't cheap to airlift.
Customs will apply on invoice value; usually around 30% minimum.
Recently, GoI increased customs duty on loud speakers; subwoofer is a loudspeaker.
If you buy in the USA, warranty will be voided or not honored in India.
Warranty is usually region specific, worked out in relationship with D&D.
So your landed cost may be close to or more than buying here.
Do your research diligently and decide what's best for you.

Cheers,
Raghu

Excess baggage will be very marginal..It won't be a significant cost..

He might just be on the margin of the allowance limit.. Even if the customs insists to pay duty, he can pay it.. BCD (0-10%) + IGST (18%) will apply..

Letz just hope you friend isn't stopped by customs for duty..

Work out the total cost, if you find it cheaper than India, get it.. Incase of any issues in future, you may get paid service from BIC network in India..

This would be a flawed assumption!!
Each Airline has funny rules about baggage size and weight.
There are linear dimension limit (L+W+H) and then there are limits on each of the dimensions.
If the baggage is in excess of what is already being carried each airline has its own rules.
I think recently an FM @RAJUSH26 got big boxes and had to pay significant excess baggage charges.
Customs (to pay or not to pay) is a Hamlet situation :)

Cheers,
Raghu

My friend got me a pair of Klipsch from US, he exceeded the baggage allowance, he was charged abt US $ 50..This was 3 yrs back.. Not sure if the rates have increased since then..

Agreed..Variable..Hope he doesn't get charged..Think he can check with support team and workout if it is cheaper..

Hi All,
Just to update you all, I called Air France customer support, they took frds PNR & info first. Then I asked for the query.
They said it is 43.8 lbs which is inside 50lb limit.
So this will be considered as a extra baggage (in short they will consider it as a 3rd bag with him)

Charges for the same will be 200$.

Now this is the equation :
240$ buy it there
200$ for extra baggage.

But if I pay it on airport it will be 200$
If I do a web checkin for booking seats & at that time if I declare & add the extra bag in luggage. They provide 30% discount equals to 140$.

INR:
17,000 rs for the woofer
140$ = 10,000 rs for baggage.

27,000 rs is the total if purchased from US.

India rate = 46,000

27k is good. Here the sub is available for 40k with discounts. So if you are not worried about warranty 27 is a good deal

Thank you for all the inputs, I will be also checking with Mumbai customs, luckily I got to know one of my friend has some contact there. Which may be very helpful for me for further process :)

27K plus customs here....depending on what rate and what mood the officials are in
