Budget cd players

Rs.25,000 is a lot of money for a hit and miss!! I don't mind the money so much as the possibility of disappointment and then the trouble for searching for another product. And then, of course, what do you do with a product you are disappointed with? Given my infamous temper, I might just smash it on the floor, and then feel bad about it for weeks. I once smashed a Modem on the feet of the MD of the company that sold me the product !! :o

Cheers

From what I've been reading, Yaqin seems to be one of the better Chinese companies with their products being highly vouched for. They are also the OEM for Grant Fidelity...

:clapping: Sometimes extreme measures are needed. I can totally understand how that could've happened... :D

P.S: BTW, does the company in question have a 3-letter name with their HO in Alwarpet? :p

Hi Venkatcr

Yaqin has a decent reputation. I know of a guy who replaced his Shanling with the Yaqin. Shanling is a very decent cd player.

Shhhhh. Don't let secrets out. But yes, it is the same company and a long time ago.

Does the Chinese company have a website? OK. I found it - Foshan Chancheng Yaqin Sound appliances factory

Cheers

Thought as much! :ohyeah:

I think the following is their main website:

Foshan Chancheng Yaqin Sound appliances factory

The following are the websites of Grant Fidelity and Pacific Valve, both reputed brands that re-brand/re-sell Yaqin products:

Grant Fidelity Home Audio | "Hi-End, Not High Priced"

Pacific Valve & Electric Company Home Page

I came to know about Yaqin when I read extremely impressive reviews for their MS-12B phono/pre-amp (priced around $300 including worldwide shipping):

Maybe I am missing something, but I am not able to locate the SD-32 CD Player in any of the sites. In any, case none of the web sites gives me great comfort. I can imagine Gobble tearing his hair out trying to make sense of the Yaqin site. I cannot make head or tails of what they are saying. Everything seems to be easily solved by saying 'World famous'. :)

Cheers

Anyway tried the entry level NAd and tried it in my set up (thats what was demanded by my cousin) and it fell flat. IMO the older 542 would knock the pants of this offering!!!

Hi Dinyaar,
Would like to know what models of Nad did you check and found 542 better.

Hi Dinyaar
Reading what you wrote about the 6003 comparing it with other players you intend to buy and Prem writing about the Sony player which is equal to $1000 players, is it true that players are most hard to judge and manufacturer if they want can rip off a buyer most with cd players?

Dinyaar:

I am curious about something. The CA 640 and 540 were praised to heaven by a number of magazines. I did hear the 640 sometime ago with the matching 640 amplifier connected to a pair of Quad 11L bookshelves. I felt the system sounded extremely good.

Did you even consider looking at the CA CD players for your friend's requirement? If not any particular reason?

The reason I am asking is that I am looking for a CD Player (budget, of course) that will become part of my system over the next few months. My other components will include a high end HTPC and an external DAC. My music tastes are quite diverse - soft rock, western classical, Hindustani, Carnatic, instrumentals, and of course film songs. The only genre I may keep away from is hard rock.

I am considering the CA, Marantz, and Emotiva ERC-1.

I am travelling to Dubai in January, and that will be a good opportunity to pick up a unit. I have written to Emotiva for pricing for delivery in Dubai. At US$400 it is very attractive.

Cheers

No venkat I did not consider the CA. I have a liking for marantz cdps and I think they are excellent in the budget range. The thing that appeals apart from the sound is the reliability of the machines. There are always lemons but in my experience marantz has fewer lemons!!!!
Its a gift for my cousin not a friend. I do not like a CA product period. I have heard the 740 & 840 are good but have never heard them. The 640 I have heard when it was just launched and I found nothing I liked in spite of the raving by What HIFI. See WHF would give 10 stars(if they didn't have to stop at 5) to a cyrus product and I owned one and am still shaking my head as to why someone could lavish such praise on such a cdp !!!!!
A CA amp maybe but only if someone puts a gun to my head!!!! I would take a simple no fuss NAD and be much much happier.
Actually for the music u mention a marantz seems a good option for a cdp.

Guns it was the 515 or is there a 516 in the Nad. Thats the cdp I tried. I had bought the 542 for myself for 24K and the 521 for 16 K and am hence comparing all three. I must add that only one Nad was auditioned this time.
Frankly I just didn't like it so am un aware of pricing but keeping regular distributor mark ups must be 20 K or higher.

Rikhav I did not really pit this marantz 6003 with the Accuphase/Esoteric. Rather compared it to the 5003,6002 & the Nad. This cdp is a gift and i am also looking for a good cdp for myself. Then I intend to sell the arcam CD 192, shift my Yamaha CDS 2000 in its place and use whatever I buy with my Accuphase amp.
But keeping in mind that I heard these cdps that cost upwards of 3L last week & these marantz/Nad a few days later I said that one can get reasonable sound from a cd using a simple, budget marantz or equivalent cdp.
U know Rikhav when I enlisted on this forum I mentioned that Its really difficult for me to select a cdp for myself. An amp / speakers is relatively easier. There are differences in cdps naturally but there are always a few things I like in every cdp I try which may or may not be as good in the other. I am yet not decided on a cdp and I am listening to as many as I can.
A whole load of my friends have ' heavily raved about' cdps from the biggies and I just cant get myself to stretch that far on a digital player.
Maybe I am wrong but one has to do what appeals to the ear, heart & the head I guess.
Rgds

I used to lust after the Marantz in the old days of KI signatures. Unfortunately, the Marantz I have heard and liked (at Audire, and if I am not wrong, at Lyrita) were both old models. I have heard the modern CDPs and that has always left me wondering what was happening. I have seen CDs stuck, or simply rejected, and the dreaded 'No CD' message.

I have also seen a number NAD CDPs pass through, and again, that has left me with a bit of worry. One had it's tray stuck outside, one never recognised any CD, and a third would take a CD, say it is playing and not give out any sound. Of course, all these were repaired, but I was a bit worried about brand new items behaving like this. To be fair, I have also seen a number of NADs behave well from day one.

Let me see if the offer from Emotiva is attractive. I can get it shipped to Dubai and pick it from there personally.

Cheers

How would the Marantz CD5001 fair with PM6002 int. amp and Mordaunt Short Avant 902i speakers (budget system). I will be getting the cdp this evening.

All three products were awarded the 5 stars from What-HI-Fi.

Any suggestion, please comment before I take the dive....if it doesn't suit my taste, then I can still set it up at my mom's place to listen to bhajans and music of hindi films.

I intend to upgrade to PM7003 + CD6003 in April 2010.

No offence to anyone (particularly to Dinyaar), but i was going through Cambridge Audio's website and I see that they have released two new CDPs - 550C and 650C. The specifications of the 650C are mind boggling, particularly the DAC part. What they seem to have done is taken what they developed for DacMagic and built it into this player. Look for more details at Azur 650C CD player.

This is purely for information. According to WhatHiFi, the Marantz 6003 in better. I also find it surprising to understand why so little information is available on the Marantz player. I shall certainly audition the Marantz and the CA before I buy one. I have yet to receive a reply from Emotiva, so that is on hold.

Cheers

Whatshifi has habit of declaring 5star initially & then taking grouptest & anouncing winner different than previous 5star.

This strategy of denouncing a former 5-star in the group test keeps them in the business eventhough we consumers are aware of the fact.

@Dinyaar. What did you like in what CDP & what did you find wanting?
What do you want form your next CDP?
Thanks
Cheers
