Advice & help on EMT turntables

Hi,

I have an EMT938 and it's making a rumbling noise on the right channel, only when the platter is spinning. Can you advise where I should start looking to troubleshoot this fault? I would really appreciate your help!

Thanks
Chris

Rumble can’t emanate from the turntable as it’s a direct drive design. Check if the platter is rotating freely or if there is any mechanical obstruction. If it’s all ok, the problem could be in the signal path where rumble sort of noise is heard.

Hi all!
My first post here so please be gentle :-)
I am about to buy a 938 with SME3009II non improved tonearm. I am looking for a spare armboard so i, in the future can mount the original EMT arm.
There is a challenge: Iˋll drive a long way to meet him and i know he does not have much knowledge about transporting it. Is there a manual in English that explain how to secure the turntable(transport screws)?
Thanks for any answers.
Aron

Hope this helps. It shows you the 3 screws to be tightened for the chassis and another 3 for the motor.

Folks,

I know that quite a number of members have managed to get an Ex-AIR EMT turntable. Most of them are not in good shape - cosmetically or functionally.

I have had the privilege of owning more than half a dozen EMT machines of various types. All of them have been serviced and brought up to prime condition by myself. This involved years of reading, talking to ex EMT engineers and practically trying out on my systems and sometimes buying very expensive spare parts from Germany.

I keep getting lot of messages from forum members wanting to talk and answer some of their questions and possibly some solutions.

This thread is being created to help any of the EMT owners on restoration, repair, spares, maintenance etc. of their EMT machines. Please feel free to post here. I will try my best to answer them or give you a solution.

EMT is a world of it's own. Most of it is unique to the design, right from tonearm cable to headshell. Every spare is very expensive. I can feel how it is to own a EMT and not being able to play or use it in a sub-optimal way. Hence this thread.

Cheers

Can be done. If you are into DIY, you can do it yourself. Where are you based?

Hi!
I have a little problem with my 938. It is spinning uneven. Playing piano music you can hear it clearly, the pitch goes up and down. Could it be that the bearing needs a good cleaning and relube? Or do i need to replace capacitors?
Thanks for answers.
Cheers

Tried to clean and relube the bearing but problem not fixed. I used an app on my mobile phone and got a little slower reading. 33,33 was 33,04-33,07 wow at 0,03%. A little slower on the 45 setting too. Funny thing is that it is close to runout/last song that is worst. In the beginning of the record i hear nothing wrong. I have been thinking on my sme3009 arm and have played with different antiskate settings without problem went away.

Ahh, seems like it is a problem with the arm. It starts to get "nervous" when it is close to the runout groove. That is a relief. Turntable is ok, platter/mat is good.
But what could cause the nervous shaking of the arm?

Problem was actually the Benz LP that has too high compliance(15 cu) for the non improoved sme tonearm. I changed to a Koetsu at 10 cu and now it really sings.
Sorry for my monologue but i was sure it was the EMT that was the problem. Anyway i have cleaned and lubricated the bearing so something good came out of the problem.
Cheers and happy Easter!

Hi!
I took off the armboard to take a photo of some missing links. The wires with contacts on i guess goes to the armlift that is not mounted on this turntable. Then there is wires cut off that shall go to the missing xlr(where the cable from the SME arm is going trough)
But there is a set of rca plugs on a cable going under the chassis. I do not know where they end. Is this tonearm cables going to step up transformers, trough riaa board and then to the xlr on the back of the turntable?
As always, happy for answers :-)
