Hey guys, I'm on the verge of purchasing a Plasma TV and was planning on picking up an air conditioner for my bedroom at the same time, figured I could cash in on the extra discount.

My room dimensions are 16'6" (L) x 9' (W) x 9'3" (H)

According to my calculations, I need a 1.5T Split Unit.

I've got a 1T in my living room which has a slightly larger dimension (12' (W) x 17' (L) x 9'3" (H) - I messed up going in for a 1T at that point).

My usage is a bare minimum of 9 hours a day, 11 months a year in both the living area and the bedroom. Basically, there will be instances where both the A/C's will be on simultaneously.

Now, I was considering 1 of 3 options:

1. Replace the living room (1T) and pick up one of those single out door unit, 2 indoor unit A/C's (I think Hitachi has it).

2. Replace the living room (1T) and pick up 2x 1.5T (And hope for a good deal; Samsung's offering free installation).

3. Just buy a single 1.5T for the bedroom.

I've got the following options at the moment:

1. Samsung Purista+ AS185BBD (5 Star, top of the line) @ 27,000 IRS (Each, with free installation).

2. Open to any Hitachi variant in a similar price range.

3. Open to any Panasonic variant in a similar price range.

Would appreciate any feedback.

TIA!

You may include Daikin brand also in your list. Their prices are no more such very higher level like before. I have gon for a 1.5 T Daikin Inverter model and it maintains temp very precisely and power consumption is comparatively low. Depending on your usage time it is suggested to go for Inverter model, whatever brand you would select.

The inverter models cost upwards of 40K each :(

That equates to a difference of 15K per unit assuming I get a 1.5T inverter model for 40K.

a couple of points to keep in mind

1. LG also has one twin indoor single outdoor unit model

2. Your A/C usually runs 9 hours a day and it is underpowered then it will have to keep coooling on an on and that will diminish its life. Better to have a matching / overpowered A/C which will cool-stop-cool-stop and this increases the life.

3. Dont look at only 5 stars, see the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio), which is a ration of current expended w.r.t cooling done. Dont take A/C which has EER below 3 if you are going for A/C upto 1.5 ton. You will find two A/Cs both 5 stars but one with higher cost usually has better EER

4. Beware of free installation --> The pipe that is used to connect the indoor unit to outdoor can be a cheaper one like alumunium, copper ones are costlier and better carriers as compared to aluminium ones. Some a/c comes witha free pipe of certain length beyond which you will have to purchase but always go for copper ones. Some of the costly a/c s are very particular about the pipe material, you end up paying more for installation but it is better cooling end of day. Also try to keep this pipe as short as possible.

5. Look for Career A/C as well, they are great as a brand but their A/Cs are expensive over samsung/lg/voltas etc.

6. Prioritize cooling over non-cooling features like whether it turns off your fan, or follows you in room.

7. Expensive A/Cs like Toshiba has a better coolant gas over normal A/Cs which offer better cooling for same power but you have to evaluate whether the difference in price can be recovered by cost of running for your specific usage hours over say 5 to 6 years.

8. Some branded models advertise that it has auto cleaning, anti-moisture removal etc etc. dont pay a lumpsome on those features alone. Remember that whatever may be the extent of auto cleansing, you will still have to end up paying AMC after first year for AC maintainence / cleansing to buy peace of mind over your costly investment.

Hope these pointers help.

I suggest only 1 brand keeping in mind your 9hr/PD requirement. O'General....
Nothing cools better; I mean NOTHING!!! Cheers :)

PS: No other ac lasts longer either! 20yr old OG works perfectly even today and chills the room in notime. It was one of those grey market original desert model.

well o'general certainly is the best but 1.5T o'general 5 star is around 48k.along with installation.

for 9 hours usage .. certainly 5 star rated is advised.. along with EER as mentioned. also check for the.. also check for the BTU... this chart can help you decide on the BTU requirements for your area.

Room Size BTU
Sq. Ft. Sq. m
150 14 up to 5,000
165 15 5,200
216 20 6,000
350 33 8,000
425 39 9,000
500 46 10,000
640 60 14,000
900 84 15,100
1,110 103 18,000
1,170 109 18,500
1,435 133 22,000
1,672 154 25,000
1,960 182 28,500 ..

we also discussed about AC as i remember last year in the forum... a bigger ac will be an overkill and frequent on/off cycles will consume more power than a smaller size running constantly. as every time the compressor turns on it draws more current and takes a few minutes to stabilize and draw lesser power...

if your area needs 2T but you get no direct sunlight.. go for a 1.5T.

try these too..

besides o'general... daikin and hitachi are good but expensive then lg/voltas...

avoid samsung ac's .. .all i heard was problems...

If you want the Best, Go for OGeneral. Period. Next best thing to have is Hitachi, then anything else.

People can correct my understanding I am wrong - I think Ogeneral is a Fujitsu Brand.

Somehow, I don't find the 1 Outdoor 2 Indoors Idea exciting, since one outdoor going down can result in both the indoors going Kaput. Besides, If at a later stage God forbid 1 of your Indoors goes BER (Beyond Economical Repair) you will be stuck with both. Cheers!

I'm considering going for a Daikin or Hitachi 1.5T 5 Star Split.

Don't get any direct sun light in either of the rooms, so no issues as such. However, I'm quite confused at the moment. We have 2 different opinions; Saikat says it's better to have the air conditioner switch on and off (trip) and thus save power and the ironhorse suggests the contrary.

Which is the case? :\

I don't think spending an additional 7-10k on an inverter model is really worth it even though the usage in both areas will be 9 hours a day minimum. Question is, if the whole A/C tripping thing is going to cost me a lot of money on the electricity bill, I might as well go for an inverter model.

What say?

The imported(gray market) O generals are made by Fujitsu a Japanese company.
The ones sold by Indian AC dealers are a JV between ETA group(STAR insurance owners) and Fujitsu.

Your A/C usually runs 9 hours a day and it is underpowered then it will have to keep coooling on an on and that will diminish its life. Better to have a matching / overpowered A/C which will cool-stop-cool-stop and this increases the life.
An over powered AC will cool very fast, but it has to keep turning OFF and ON the compressor too frequently, which in turn puts a huge strain on your power requirements and electricity bill.
Starting up the motor consumes much more electricity than running it continuously.

I one of my my 13 x13 feet bedroom facing sun I have a career estrella 1.5 ton and approximately the on-off happens 3 to 4 times per hour and the ac remains off for 7 to 10 minutes once auto shut maintaining a temp of 26-27 C. Do you guys think that 4 times on /off will draw more power as compared to the a/c running for 30 minutes?

it can completely vary from room to room..

but in general lets look at it this way.. instead of 1.5 T you can have a 1 T running continously.. so that way you save power...

second .. the 1.5 T stays off for say 5 minutes.. but next time the outer unit starts.. it pulls more load for few minutes and then settle for normal running current... so it generally equalizes the gain of saving electricity..

yeah if you want to save electricity then you can keep like 24 in day and 22 in night.. and that will increase the time the outer unit stays off and apparantely bring you on the side where the electrcity will be saved.

So long story short, are you suggesting that it would be better to buy a 1T 5 star rating Split for my room? Or should I buy a 1.5T Inverter A/C?

as discussed before if you dont get direct sunlight a 1 ton 5 star would do..

regarding invertor A/C as technologically they should be saving power hpwever i have not used one so cant comment on the practicality..however specs says that they are 40-50% efficient than normal AC.

also invertor ac's are like 15k upwards of normal split AC's
