Dear All,

I am looking for a true 1 Mbps Broadband Internet Connection in Kolkata without any capping or speed reduction after certain GB is reached.

Kindly provide the ISP and Plan for such connection.

BSNL has recently doubled the speed from 512 kbps to 1 Mbps but with limitation after 6GB.

Thanks.

Hi

I do not think any service provider gives you the option of unlimited broadband without any capping called as FUP(fair usage policy) in India. They force you to go for the higher package as in my case I had the plan of 4 mbps with a FUP limit of 30gb which used to get exhausted within 2 weeks. So now I opted for 4 mbps with 75gb FUP for more rental amount. This FUP policy is so ridiculous when they say that it is used to safeguard the customer who does not use much of the bandwidth.

Thanks

You can overcome the capping by using a VPN. Works very well if your ISP authenticates by IP.

Can you please elaborate on this? I believe most of us get dynamic IP rather than static IP address from the ISP. So not sure whether this works for everybody.

Thanks

The VPN IP will only be a second IP associated with your PC NIC along with the original from the local ISP that is allocated to the DSL modem.. I doubt if this will defeat the billing server.

i think reliance had such plans, havent checked in a while though. give it a shot. there will also be some local/regional providers who might give u this.

VPN works within the data constraints of your ISP. It is just a secure virtual tunnel inside your existing link. VPN will not give you more or extra bandwidth.

In most plans where bandwidth is not reduced, there is no capping. You have to pay for extra usage.

I use Beam Cable (WELCOME TO BEAM FIBER Hyderabad only). I have 10 MBPS for 30 GB and post that 2 MBPS.

Beam authorizes by login via their portal so its not online 24-hours like Tata ISP (which I previously used).

I've set the login details in my router (Netgear) so I'm basically online 24 hours. I have a laptop and 2 PCs connected as well as a couple of mobile phones. But my primary system is where I d/l a lot of stuff and its also on 24/7. I use VPN (StrongVPN.com) on my primary system.

When on VPN (which is always) the data usage is not counted. My data usage is 300 to 350 GB the past 2 months (that's 300 GB each month) but that's never reflected in my account details at Beam. And needless to say I get 10 to 15 MBPS always. Without VPN I max out at 10 MBPS but when on VPN I get even 18 MBPS at times.

I can vouch for the the Rs.999 MTNL plan maniac 2004 mentioned. Have used it for the last few years with no complaints. Truly unlimited at 1.3 Mbps and good service support, at least in Mumbai. Download speed averages 140-170 kB/s.

They also offer a 22 GB cap plan at 2 Mbps for Rs 750/month.

MTNL hai, to sahi hai :clapping: am on the same plan, enjoying 1.3 mbps daytime, 2 mbps night-time, and 2 mbps full-day on sundays.
(though of-late am sensing some feeling of envy against our hyd friends enjoying the superb service of 'beam' ;))

but sad that our OP friend cant avail of what either of the above has to offer. i dont think many of the posts here including this one that dont relate to the kolkata-situation are really of any help to him :o

Me too have beam the great. Same plan.
Experience for instance, downloading mp3 song is instantaneous. Like copying from c: to d:. :yahoo:

P.S: We are only making the other members unhappy and jealous. :D

BEAM does not seem to have a very good data management solution in place. Or they aren't too bothered about usage at this time, since starting (assuming here) and needing to get a user base. or, they have a very cheap deal for the pipe to the internet. or, they are caching, and not charging for pulling data off these.

also, a VPN is (usually) a two way street. the sites you want to connect to or d/l from need to be using the same (or similar) VPN in order for it to work, with pre-shared keys, etc. IMHO, most sites would not support VPN, so i do not understand what you mean here. unless u r referring to specific p2p sites only from whom u d/l.

Actually Beam does have a good data management plan and after crossing 30 GB under FUP speeds are reduced to 2 MPBS for my plan. And its the same for every user.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) basically lets me mask my IP i.e. its similar to a proxy but private to me and supports all protocols including HTTPS (all proxies don't support it). No restrictions in terms of sites or usage when using proxy or VPN. On VPN when using a US IP its like I'm based in US... even Google is fooled (Google is never fooled by proxies unless they are Elite proxies).

BTW I use VPN for my work. I work with clients in the US and need to use a US IP. Its only by chance I found that when on VPN my FUP is never reached so I continue to enjoy unlimited speeds for unlimited downloads.
