1 Mbps Internet Connection with No capping.

Hi,
All these 512kbps, 1Mbps, 2MBps, 4MBps and beyond- all these really give the speed that's mentioned?
I really doubt!!!
I check my speed through this Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and most of the time my speed never came beyond 50-70kbps.(on BSNL broadband connection 750UL). Even my friend's airtel 2Mbps plan - he never gets what's mentioned!!
I suppose the ISP's are having a gala time in ripping customers - when actual speed is far less than what's mentioned!!

Or is this the standard practice of ISP's to provide less speed when compared to what they actual claim?

Are any of you using alternate site/tool to check their actual speed?

I have a 4mbps airtel connection with FUP limit of 75gb. I hardly get 400 to 500kbps speed at any given time. If you read between the lines when they advertise it is clearly mentioned that the speed is upto the ISP provider and hence they are not bothered whether the same speed is available till the consumer. It is the same case with all providers in India.

Thanks.

Try to test your speed with a torrent with lots of seeders. I have used Speed test many times and never got correct speed since many factors are at play when using HTTP.

When healthy torrents are used full speed is acheived since you get connected to multiple peer.

Its very difficult to get full speed in HTTP mode.If you dont get full speed in good torrents then youe ISP is limiting your bandwidth.

Is it Kb or KBps, there is difference, the speedtest.net gives results in KBps so 50-70KBps is 400kbps to 700kbps.

BSNL 750UL is 512kbps (small "b"). I am getting around 600kbps for same plan.

Small "b" is bit. And capital "B" is Bytes. Small or capital "k" are same kilo.

1 byte = 8 bit.

Sorry if you already know this.

Lot of people get misled by the b and B. I also did once upon a time.
2Mbps (megabits) = 256kBps (kilobytes)
so 2Mbps will actually take you 4 seconds to download 1megabyte theoretically

This is my BSNL ADSL with 2Mbps dload / 512kbps upload

This capping thingy is real pain ,
hathway guys take 550 here for 512K unlim..it is 256k unlim in 2-3days .
So we get 46-65kb DL intially , after cap 30kb speed of DL.

How ever my sister has been deployed to extract best out during day via wifi .

i cant stream many stuff after cap ,so i pull data at night when no power loss occurs ,daily 1 good content remains by the time it s morning .

ISPs take unfair money for fair usage , IT hub like bangalore must have has atleast 80GB fair usage in 512k speed.

my android phone does a good job pulling data via wifi it resumes all the time if power loss , i feed him power via usb link.

Take anything but TATA INDICOM "PREPAID Service" they have a very pathetic service with an addon on of their customer care service which is far worse and too pathetic. The customer care person don't know what is going on the field and they will give you fake timelines and they take you for granted.

I am using Airwire cable - Unlimited,no FUP...2mbps for Rs1650/month prepaid. Have been using for 2 months with no problems. However this is available only in Marathahalli, Bangalore.
