I have a 5.1 Home Theatre with one 8" subwoofer in a 20×13 ft room.

I want to add more power to low frequency.
Please suggest me the best out of the following alternates.
... using a 12" subwoofer in place of the existing one;
Or
... adding one more 8" subwoofer.
My ACT has only one subwoofer connector and I want to use a shielded Y splitter subwoofer cable.
Please advise me.
Thank you.

I would go with option 2 add one more sub of the same kind you have, using a Y cable.

Another vote for option 2. Two subwoofers, properly placed, can give you smoother bass (fewer/smaller peaks & dips) AND greater seat to seat consistency.

If this is your only requirement, the answer isn't straightforward. You will need to inspect the specs of the 8 and 12 inch subs you are considering to see which of your 2 proposed alternatives will deliver the greater LF power you are seeking. Of course, as others have said, for better quality of bass, 2 8 in will almost always trump 1 12 in.

Since your need is HT, If you are going for a 12inch then i would say that would be better than 2 x 8inch subs as it will simply move more air. Place than in a corner and you will get more impact than 2 x 8inch and also lesser wiring.

I am not a great fan of splitting RCA outputs.
