3D BluRay Player?

I had the demo of LG Bx580, Samsung D5100 and D5500 with bluray demo disks and my HD/SD movie collection today.

D5500 in samsung plaza started playing all the movies from my disk but 'paused' automatically after every 3 seconds. The salesman said that there seem to be a problem with the set since it plays bluray disks. I asked him to give demo of the bluray disk and it dint play either. Said it costs 12.5k and issues like this are covered in warrenty. Said I'll get the demo elsewhere and come back if prices are high elsewhere.

Other two are in a different multi brand showroom.

LG Bx580: 10k with HDMI cable free. Has 10% cashback over it. (Letsbuy has it for 9k with a bluray disk and HDMI free)

Interface - Has 3D user interface - Awesome, snappy and reads the disk (1TB) in a jiffy compared to my WDTV.
Browzing through files is faster than WDTV.
Opened all the files which the WDTV cannot open also. I have stored them in a different folder. This is a surprise.
PQ is only ok. Blacks not black enough - Could be the LG LCD - Not sure.
Lots of grains in certain movie files.
Asked the sales person to play some bluray and he played Dabang. The picture graininess was visible in this bluray too.
All in all, great 3D/2D UI, played all the movies I thew at it. (I mean ALL), PQ not great but good.

Samsung D5100: 6.4k. Has 10% cashback over it. No 3D. (Letzbuy has it for 5.7k with 30 moserbaer DVD ser free)

Interface - Awesome. Much more snappy and fast than Bx580 (and obviously WDTV)
Opened all files and played back smooth. FF and Rwd worked on all files. No voice sync issues that I can see.
No grains and stuff, good contast and good blacks. Played in D6600 LED.
Played the bluray pretty well without grains.
No 3D. Thats the only issue.
Very very good for 6.4k.

The sales person told that Sony S380 will not recognize the external HDD. So did not demo.

Blasto,

Thanks for the review. Just wanted to know on the formats tested. Mkv, mp4, avchd, mov, 3gp, cropped mkv(not sure if its a terminology as such).

No panasonic in ur review. In case you've reviewd this before can you share that deatils too.

Thanks.

I tested the usual torrent download formats mkv (720 & 1080p), divx and mp4 (typically SD)

I dont have avchd, 3gp, mov or real media files.

My main requirement was 3D bluray playback and to play media I have which are not playable in my WDTV2 device.

No panasonic in ur review. In case you've reviewd this before can you share that deatils too.

I heard that panasonics have real bad media file support and do not support NTFS. A deal breaker for me.

Happy Diwali to all!!!! For format support samsung n Lg are better options if you dont have a media player, for 3d blu ray with a region free option(in case you want it) I would recommend the panasonics to anybody

Just fyi.. I got the Panasonic BDT-110 from amazon and got it shipped through aramex shop and ship.

Cost me a total of 5909.26 (cost) + 2593 (shipping to India) = 8.5k

Reached me within 10 days of me ordering it on amazon.

I am in the process of getting a step down transformer built so haven't had the chance to test it yet.

Congrats on ur purchse..

This is cheaper than what 20north or ebay quotes. You've not mentioned the customer duty. Is it implicit ?

Did you get the avatar movie with the BDP ?

Also expecting a review and especially on the various formats :).

Enjoy..

Thanks...

Shop and Ship marks items as gift if they are below 10000 INR, but whether that will get customs exemption is mostly on luck. I guess I got lucky this time.. :)

The avatar movie comes as a mail-in rebate. For claiming it I will have to fill a handwritten form and post it to an US address.. applies only to US residents

Review will have to wait a bit unfortunately.. the engineer who is making me my transformer is yet to deliver it.

Samsung D5500
Went to check but not available for demo or sales.

My requirement is Region Free (Blu-Ray/DVD). Else my all DVD's which I purchased from US and UK will go for a toss. And it should be WiFi and USB for my WD 1TB HD.

So Guys please help me out. I am desperately looking for a player which will have these features and my Budget is 15K - 20K

Thanks in advance.

Samsung D5500
Went to check but not available for demo or sales.

It is available for sales and demo in samsung plaza opposite to cyber towers. The demo unit had problems with USB connectivity though. You can check DVD and Bluray playback. The sales man said it will be recritified and available for demo this week though.

D5100 is available for demo in reliance digital banjara hills. It is same as D5500 minus 3D. So demo will be same except for 3D.

BTW, Iam a newbie when it comes to Bluray players too. Will call you when Iam free on the number you sent in PM but can't answer much querries though. :)

no PS3 cannot be controlled using normal/universal IR remotes. It works on bluetooth though and a dedicated bluetooth remote (sony official product) is available for arnd 1.5k. check this link:

http://www.sony.co.in/product/ps3+bd+remote

I would like to highlight that Logitech Harmony Remotes does work with PS3s but to bridge the gap between IR based Harmony Remotes and Bluetooth controlled PS3 you would need to buy a separate Adapter from Logitech called Harmony Adapter for PS3 which pairs with the PS3 on one hand and forwards remote codes from the Harmony Remotes. I have it and it works like a charm. This think costs around 30 to 40 dollars so that would be the additional cost that users will need to bear in case they already have Harmony Remote.

Mate, you could have picked up the Oppo BDP - 93 from US as well alongwith your BDs, costs approx 500 USD there. ANother 60/70 USD will get you a mod chip to make it region free post which you can play any region BD......

i think oppo 93 for $500/- should be considered only if u have a large collection of dvds which u want to upscale.
for playing blurays any good player costing one fourth the oppo's price, will give u the same pq. making them region free is not an issue as many software hacks r avaialble. also most of the blurays even in usa are region free and more than 90% of indian blurays r region free.

i own the oppo opdv971h and the oppo bdp83. i bought the bdp83 for use with my projector and it is very good. but for a screen size of 50inches, i think it would be a waste of money. for the panny 50vt20d i bought recently i have bought the panasonic bdp310

giddavr,

does your bdp310 play 1080p rips with DTS tracks and have you made your player region free for BD playback?

I bought it on amazon a couple of weeks back, with free avatar 3d. it is still in usa. will reach me on dec 9th with my sister who is bringing it in baggage

thats not true, though seems so, give me an example for which model its certain, no "may" and "can" please

also most of the blurays even in usa are region free and more than 90% of indian blurays r region free.

but that depends upon what you are looking for, I can give you a list which are considered to be all time greats yet only region A or at most B, Even if all region exists too difficult to trace

your remark about OPPO is interesting, I personally find it hard - how better a player (OPPO 93) can be that it charges 5 times of a popular model (LG 550, Sony 380, Samsung 5500...)???

I must add this, I found this whole blu-ray business is uncertain, points

1.blu-rays/DVDs are region coded, yet online stores hardly mention that, check by yourself flipkart,homeshop18,indiatimes shopping...
2.Thers no logic behind prices, some of them are same in both countries (IN,US/UK) and some too different.
3.How come companies selling films @ 1500/-, is that reasonable?? don't think so, 500/-, 600/- is fine, I want to see films to enjoy it not get bankrupt!! but they will soon become affordable, I hope so
4.Why this region "C" was developed?? has a single english blu-ray manufactured with "region C"? it really doesn't make sense, viwers in "region C" are at the mercy of these studios whether they know a country like India exists!!
5.If you (studios) want to limit DVDs to a particular region, no issue, best of luck, then why "all region"??? I will assume we are too inferior to see them, either release or not, don't just make us hang in between!!

all in all buying a all region blu-ray player seems to me the best option, there are plenty of them - only at a price twice of what it should be!!

All panasonic 3d players like 110,210.310 can be made region fee after a donation to enhanced firmware for their efforts,i think some one paid 50euros for region free mod,now take panasonic bdt 110 from say shop n ship comes to 9-10k(estimate) add 50 euros and rs400 for the transformer,u have a 3d region free player for less than 15k.
Oppo is reference quality player ,its the upscaling chip that makes its so expensive and to top that its fully featured media player, plays BD iso and 5.1 flacs, those samsungs n Lg never gonna do that for $100 bucks.Region c is complete joke, its best to get a region A player then then shop for either A disks or region free.A lot of BDs at amazon uk are region free and every hindi Bd i have seen so far is region free.

if u found my remark about oppo interesting what would u say when i tell u this..
When youre an electronics manufacturer and you have a gadget that just wont sell. In this situation, you can do a few things: you can reach out to the community and try to drum up interest, you can launch an advertising campaign, or you can tweak the device into a new model and hope that the successor gadget will go over better. Or you can do what Lexicon did: buy up the stock of the sales-lagging gadget, rebrand it and add $3,000 to the price.

According to the sleuths over at Audioholics, thats just what Lexicon did when they took the $500 Oppo BDP-83 and without changing a single feature or modifying the chassis, rebranded it as the $3,500 Lexicon BD-30, a THX-Certified Blu-Ray player.

According to Audioholics, When we received the player the first thing we did was open it up to get a look at the inside. Imagine my surprise when I found that not only did the Lexicon share the same boards and transport as the Oppo it was in fact AN OPPO BDP-83 PLAYER, CHASSIS AND ALL, SHOVED INSIDE AN ALUMINUM LEXICON WRAPPER. As far as we could determine, Lexicon didnt change a single thing in terms of the hardware. Heck, they didnt even lift the boards out of the chassis, opting instead to cut out the bottom of their own chassis to accommodate the venting locations, and putting a darker blue filter over the Oppos VFD display to give it a slightly deeper hue.

Absolutely shameful and disgusting. Then again, if youre willing to spend $3500 for a Blu-Ray player, you probably deserve to be burned.

as for the blurays always google for info before u buy it..buyer beware and all that.

i have seen some English DVDs released by the hollywood studios in india being only for indian region, but i haven't looked at any of the blurays, because it is now quite easy to buy them online.

usually i download a hd torrent of a movie i like and if i find that i watch it more than 5 times, then i buy the bluray

Hi Guys, I have been following this thread since last few days.
i have bought LG5700 in Pune , it is a 3D TV. Now want to buy a 3D Blue raye player to enjot it to an extend. Also planning to ask my freinds in US to get 3D Bluerays for me on their way home.

Now, I realize from this thread that, if I need to buy blueray CDs in US, I need to have a region free blueray or a a region free player.

So few questions -

1) Do we have region free blueray CDs ?

2) Is it advisable to buy B3D lueray player in US and if yes, which one do you recommend, considering compatibility of formats, cost and PQ ?

3) If not in US, then which one to buy in India. I want region free player ..

4) How about buying Playon HD or popcorn media players rather than buying 3D Blueray players ? What is the limitation of Playon HD and Popcorn players for India purchase or for that matter in the engineering of these media players as against the blueray players >

Pls help.. If you can suggest me straight the model name and Appox Price, that would be grt !

1) Do we have region free blueray CDs ?

Yes they are avialable plenty on the market, go to Blu-ray, Blu-ray Movies, Blu-ray Players, Blu-ray Reviews and check which movie titles have been released so far on Blu Rays as Region Free.

2) Is it advisable to buy B3D lueray player in US and if yes, which one do you recommend, considering compatibility of formats, cost and PQ ?

You can buy any one just check if they are 3D compatible lots of models like Panasonic DMP-BDT210/310 etc, Samsung BD6500, LG BD650 etc. While buying in US remember that you will not get any warranty in India. They will be region A locked.

3) If not in US, then which one to buy in India. I want region free player ..

In India Onida BDX 1100 is region free through remote hack codes, check other threads on this forum on this but it supports only 5.1 and no 3D compatibility so ruled out, lots of other models i mentioned above are available in India too but Region C locked. I suggest buy from US if you have the option then you will be able to play region A locked BDs purchased from US as well as Region Free ones which most BDs in Indian markets are. There are US websites which sell hardware modded region free BD Players like 220-electronics.com. Look for similar info on this forum.

4) How about buying Playon HD or popcorn media players rather than buying 3D Blueray players ? What is the limitation of Playon HD and Popcorn players for India purchase or for that matter in the engineering of these media players as against the blueray players >

You will have to rely on downloaded 3D content only to play using media players. 3D contentents are larger in size and you will have to burn considerable ISP bandwidth to unless you are already doing so.

Pls help.. If you can suggest me straight the model name and Appox Price, that would be grt !

If you are looking in India, model names and respective prices are available on respective websites. Not sure about your budget but there are players from 5000 INR to 40-50000 INR.

PS3 has one of the best upscaler in market, so for 17K you an get it for sure and will not regret however it will be region C locked like the one I have. I would say if you have firends abroad get a Region A locked PS3 for even lesser and play Region A (US) BDs which your friends are going to bring and any other BD you purchase in India will anyway be region free mostly. There is a dedicated thread for PS3 vs BDP discussion check that

http://www.hifivision.com/blu-ray-d...rs/16023-ps3-vs-dedicated-blu-ray-player.html

for your budget of 10K try LG BX580, Philips BDP5200
