I believe it will still PASS THROUGH DTS MA if your AVR supports decoding. This way you don't miss anything if your AVR does the decoding (preferred way).It does not support 7.1 on DTS because DTS-HD MA is not supported on it. So even if your HT system is 5.1 if you try to play a BD with DTS-HD MA 5.1 you will get the core track output only.
Is Sony BDP-S480 3D Bluray player available in India a "region free" one?
I wanted to buy one, please help.
No it is region locked to C.
And prankey yes you are right, that slipped out of my mind, thanks for mentioning this.
Best 3D Bluray player is a HTPC with a bluray drive and a good graphics card (nvidia 400 series and above r equivalent ATI Radeon) and a good software like Power DVD 11 or Arcsoft Total Media Theatre.
Graphics processing power of newer graphics cards are so much more than all available 3d bluray players including OPPO-93 and they give best performance. Even the upscaling prowess is gr8 with the right software like power dvd 11 and they decode all audio and video formats.
I am planning to buy it from Thailand (Bangkok), what will be the "region" there?
zeeya, it will be region A, check this site for all details on voltage, plug type and region codes by country.
Thailand Technical Information for Travelers - Voltage / Plug / Region - WPR
madhav is there a possibility of a BD Drive to be region free?
Haisaikat
India is in region C and Thailand region A, can I be able to use the player bought from there?
Thanks for the info
BD drives are all region free and the region locking is based on the software used to play the bluray. Most popular bluray playing softwares are region free
Though a few new bluray drives try to lock region, it can be bypassed with a simple firmware patch or crack which is available easily on the internet and takes 5 mins to download and applyhyeah:
Thanks, can i build an HTPC from scratch within 10K with HDMI 1.4 out that can support 3D in future and can bitsream HD audio formats along with 1080p output?
A HTPC is also the most powerful gaming console one can have and also something you will use for work among the countless other things you can do on a PC. So just comparing its cost with a bluray player is not fair and NO you cannot build it in 10k.
Assuming you use your TV as the monitor then atleast 25k-30k+ is required to build a good pc with a powerful graphics card with 3d gaming capabilities.
If I do not require gaming, only 3D playback will I be able to make in 15K? suppose future proof mobo, graphics card, ram and hdd (minimum required), power unit, cabinet, lan/wifi/bluetooth (optional).

Hmmmm. Probably yes. Get a Core2Duo/dualcore processor and 2GB ram and 250/320gb hdd and Nvidia GT430(costs around3.5k street price) or GT520(around 2.5-3k street price) and a BD Drive(costs around 3.5-4k for lg) and min price power unit, cabinet etc. I think you can get it all at around 15-16k . If you are in Bangalore go to SP Road and you can get it for cheapest prices with warranty/bill.
And this will still have more processing power than even the best 3D bluray player. Use a software like powerdvd11 and nvidia 3dtv play to play all your bluray 3d discs with hdmi 1.4a interface to your tv.Not only that, with gt430 or similar gpu you can play most games in 720p 3d atleast with medium settings even though this is not a high end graphics card.
I have such a setup at home and have tried it out for both 3d movie playback and gaming with excellent results and hence i am recommending it.
Why not a 3d media player?![]()
