Hi Video Gurus,

This section has inspired me to go for some 3D viewing. Bent towards a projector. But dont have much idea about it. Please let me know my options and also what hardware I would require to play 3D content on it. As of now, I only have a desktop comp & a laptop with onboard graphics card. My purpose is only movies & other 3D contents & videos. I am not into gaming at all. Not allocated any specific budget but will decide only after some elementary knowledge. Please let me know that wall color reqd. & if a cloth screen will be fit for viewing?

Thanks & regards,
Saket

There is no common standards established yet for 3D display/glasses format - it would take some more time to settle down among the various vendors, if at all...

However, currently we can see the 3d evolution starting from Analglyphs, to signalling based wired/wireless on IR, Bluetooth and DLP-Link based options. This is based on the technology aspect. Now assuming even if two vendors use the same technology (eg IR) the signalling codes used by them should also match for the glasses to be interchangeable / usable.

Given the above situation, its highly unlikely that, in general, the 3D glasses from one Vendor are compatible with another..

The only bright option on the horizon currently seems to be the DLP Link based tech. This is based on the DLP Chip itself and hence more or less independent of any vendor implementation/customization. Thus it would be a safe bet to assume any DLP-Link 3D glass will work with any DLP-Link enabled device irrespective of the vendor.

Also as the hardwork of implementing this type of 3D is in the DLP chip or display itself, the 3D glasses are much simpler, lighweight and hence more affordable.

I think the best option for 3D as of now is to go with the following:

1. Any display (TV/pj/Monitor) that can support 120Hz refresh at decent enough resolution
2. DLP Link 3D glasses.
3. If the display itself dosent support 3D decoding, then the display can be driven with a basic 3d graphics card driving the display at 120hz on a HTPC/Laptop + s/w to decode the 3d files

The above would be a decent starting point and as close to the 'theater effect' as possible...

I would also like to hear if anybody has a better option for 3d as of now..

Thanks for the writeup TMA but I am a novice in this area & unfortunately couldnt make much out of it....of course wasnt latin & greek for me but would appreciate anything that you may write/provide link for a beginner.
I was looking at this Viewsonic PJD 5126 Projector: Flipkart.com
any opinions? what other hardware I would need, like glasses, 3 d playing equipment???
Please enlighten.

Thanks,
Saket

Basically I would suggest:

- Go for any DLPLink capable projector based on your budget.
- DLPLink glasses are more readily available and not tied to a specific brand.

Make sure you have something to drive the projector @120Hz if 3D is not natively supported by it.

For viewing in 3d one needs:
1. DLP Link projector - starts from 30k upwards
2. DLP Link 3d Glasses - starts from $25 upwards each
3. Something to drive the pj at 120Hz (Laptop/htpc/mediaplayer/etc)

Ofcourse 3d content to view!
- the DLP projectors only support frame sequential format.
- if using s/w player, ANY 3d format will do as you will have s/w option to convert it into frame sequential format.

PJ options:
Entry level - Dell M110, Acer k130/330, Others in Benq, Vivitek etc.
start searching from DLP Link - 3D Ready Projector - 3D DLP 3D Active Glasses - Classroom Projector - Education Projectors | DLP - Texas Instruments

Glasses options:
Sainsonic, Chinese makes (see amazon/ebay),etc
