3D TV - The big four offer - Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic

I may be wrong but it seems that in long run 3D techology will find better use in the gaming industry than Movie / Television viewing.

I personally like 2D than 3D.

Your comments are based on today's 3D technology.. We do not know whats in stock 10 years forward.. 3D can become so much attractive that 2D can become a distant past..

that is not the point at all -

3D TV will do 2D TV - but not vice versa - and probably at the same price point after a few months - then what does one do? - especially if it is a family shared tv- in which family there is an impressionable 11 year old boy with lots of friends?:)

Like someone mentioned above...3D is good for kids....personally I cant stand 3D.... had to see avatar and toy story 3 both in 2d.

I feel 3D is good only for gaming.

..Don't take me wrong but.. one of California's biggest industries (a multi billion dollar industry - I won't name it coz this is a family forum.. i guess you guessed it by now :cool:) will be swift in embracing this technology & expecting to do brisk business.. :lol:

In US Samsung 50" HD-Ready 3D plasma sells for less than the Full HD C550.
In India it would have definitely changed the equation. You would get a 50" 720p Plasma for around ~55K!!!
Thats close to 32" LED TV from Samsung(if I go with above post from spirovious).

I am sure many would have gone for it.

I am anticipating that most of TVs in 2011 will be 3D TVs and in 2012 3D TVs will be the only once you get.

PS: I arrived at 55K by 1$ = Rs. 55 ; the ratio I saw with US C550; Actual US price $989.

Hey, 55K by 1$ = Rs. 55 - where are you getting that? :licklips: :)

1$ ~ Rs. 46 is today's conversion.

You are right. Have read that LED (edge and local) and 3D will be more mainstream and affordable from 2011.

This LCD vs LED is quite an interesting topic. After some reading it gives me an impression that LED does exactly what an LCD does in terms of picture. Maybe the size, lower power consumption and (slightly) better blacks are LED advantages. These are again much visible on full local dimming LED. The LCD burden of motion blur and uneven backlight still remain major disappointments even with LED.

So are LEDs worth the asking price specially when it is not a new technology as it is marketed to be?

The next statement had the source of the conversion rate ;)

50C550 in US is $1300. 1300x55=71500 which is closer to what we are getting.

Wish we could get electronic items at $1 -> 46 rate :licklips:

i just checked out Sony 3D -- The pic quality is exceptionally good in 3D (although that was their demo Blue ray CD), The sound was AMAZING (they are giving a sound bar + a surround speaker "free" with the TV), + they are giving a blue ray DVD player with it free(they have to ?? to get the full benefit of 3D?) + giving 2 3D glasses + 9 blue ray movie discs free. Total "free" stuff worth ~ 66,000 Rs.( not counting 3D glasses worth ~ 13000 Rs as per brochure). Total TV costing 1,20,000 for 40 inch (1,50,000 for 46 inch) including handling and installation.
Guys ,, IS IT WORTH IT ?
1. Havn't tried out Samsung 3D yet.
2. What about the Headache and dizziness scare with 3D. ? any updates?
3. Any other brands coming up with 3D ( heard LG ? Panasonic? ).

I don't know enough about 3D TV pricing to offer an opinion. All that I know is that Panasonic's 3D TV range is available in 2 sizes 50" & 65".

The model number is P50VT20 which is the only 3D Panasonic PDP available in India. This model comes with 1 pair of 3D glasses and the best price I have found till date is Rs. 1.65L.

I don't think there are any other freebies along with it.

Well compared to samsung 3d its cheaper.
The other main advantage of the HX800 3d tv that you saw is that its some kind of local dimming capability.

Whether its worth is a different matter.
Personally i steel feel 3d in their current form is still far from perfection.
I would rather have a google tv function then the 3d capabilty.

avatar after effects :P... release of the jazz singer (1927) when sound revolutionized the cinema putting an end to silent era.. i think james cameron did something close to what happened in 1927. i think 3D revolution has begun on 35mm celluloid watching 3D movies in theaters is a bliss i must say a treat to eyes :) i wonder how 3D films will look on 35 MM 4K projector i haven't seen any multiplex in Mumbai which has 4k all r 2k. except one in adlabs studios in filmcity now reliance entertainment where digital imaging of all hindi films takes place i spent 3 hours there and i never witnessed picture so gorgeous! can say a perfect cinema image almost real!in america all theaters are 4k.anyways 3D will take time to come home or maybe its not meant for homes. glasses irritate after an hour. few of my friends also get motion sickness it ruins whole day.

reviews say panasonic vt20 shoots best 3D images because plasma tech dose not have flickering probs like LCD and its available in india with infinite black pro :) KURO technology... cheers

Samsung 3D is presently working out more expensive than SONY 3D both price wise and more so after accounting for the freebees being given by Sony. Sony website shows 3 models in 3D catalogue -- LX, NX and HX series. Presently only the NX (710) series seems to be available, and that too in one size only --40 inch. 46 inch not available even in Sony stores ?!

Before you jump on the 3D wagon, would recommend testing the same out as everyone will not adapt well to the technology and there are side effects after watching the same.

In the end you should not end up buying a product which you hardly use.

I see people going Ga Ga over the technology but no one is making noise on the side effects probably because you wouldn't have watched the same for a good number of hours and also the effect varies from person to person.

Please have a look at the below advisory also pasting the link : -

3D Viewing Conditions
To watch in 3D mode, you need to put the 3D Active Glasses on and press the power button on top of the glasses. Fluorescent lighting may cause a flickering effect and direct sunlight may affect the operation of the 3D glasses. Turn off all fluorescent lighting and block sources of direct sunlight before watching in 3D mode.
Photosensitive Seizure Warning and Other Health Risks
Some viewers may experience an epileptic seizure or stroke when exposed to certain flashing images or lights contained in certain television pictures or video games.
If you or any of your family has a history of epilepsy or stroke, please consult with a medical specialist before using the 3D function.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, immediately stop watching 3D pictures and consult a medical specialist:
(1) altered vision;
(2) lightheadedness;
(3) dizziness;
(4) involuntary movements such as eye or muscle twitching;
(5) confusion;
(6) nausea;
(7) loss of awareness;
(8) convulsions;
(9) cramps; and/or
(10) disorientation.
Parents should monitor and ask their children about the above symptoms as children and teenagers may be more likely to experience these symptoms than adults.

Viewing in 3D mode may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain, and decreased postural stability. It is recommended that users take frequent breaks to lessen the likelihood of these effects. If you have any of the above symptoms, immediately discontinue use of this device and do not resume until the symptoms have subsided.

We do not recommend watching 3D if you are in bad physical condition, need sleep or have been drinking alcohol.
Watching TV while sitting too close to the screen for an extended period of time may damage your eyesight.
The ideal viewing distance should be at least three times the height of the TV screen. It is recommended that the viewer's eyes are level with the screen.
Watching TV while wearing 3D Active Glasses for an extended period of time may cause headaches or fatigue. If you experience a headache, fatigue or dizziness, stop watching TV and rest.

Do not use the 3D Active Glasses for any purpose other than viewing 3D television. Wearing the 3D Active Glasses for any other purpose (as general spectacles, sunglasses, protective goggles, etc.) may physically harm you or weaken your eyesight.
Viewing in 3D mode may cause disorientation for some viewers. DO NOT place your television near open stairwells, cables, balconies or other objects that may cause you to injure yourself.

Here are few links highlighting the same .

So before you take the gamble of buying a 3D Tv pause for a moment and think is it really worth taking a health risk and how many of us get a medical checkup done or look at family medical history before buying a TV .

At this point, I feel its better to put that monnie for a bigger panel. The ideal time to buy is after 2 years. By then all technical niggles would have been ironed out and probably it would be very safe for viewing. It would be 50% cheaper and titles will be easily available at a lower cost. Now, every brand is experimenting and you are paying for their research and capital investments more than the TV itself. Just my personal opinion.
