Dear All,
I am new to the forum, and apologize if the topic has been covered earlier aswell.
I am not much of an expert, and hence seek the opinion of learned members here :)

Currently, I am considering an 40" LED TV (non 3D).

After a lot of consideration amongst, Sony, Samsung and LG; I came to a conclusion that LG is not as much in the competetion yet compared to Samsung and Sony (am I wrong here?).

Here are the options I am considering:
Samsung 40D5900
Sony 40EX520

Please post your recommendations.

Difference in Price: Almost 10K higher for Sony. (Is Sony really worth it?)

My Budget: Upto 65K

Why not 3D?
I do not think 3D technology has reached a lot of maturity yet. It's quite stressful to watch 3D. regardless of the the company. I would wait for few more years before I invest in 3D. (am I wrong here?)

Further Questions:-

Refresh Rates:

I see most of 3D TVs have more refresh rates, does these refresh rates also play a role in 2D rendering? I mean, the TV might decide to show at a lower refresh rate for 2D images, but needs higher for 3D.

Edge Lit LEDs:
How much of a real improvement Edge Lit LED TVs are compared to traditional LCD panels? I mean, the main source of light are still tubes for edge Lit LEDs, and LEDs only play role in color enhancements, contrast etc. But the question is how well they do it?
I would agree full array LED with local dimming is best in the class technology, unfortunately not in my budget now :)

Thanks,
Biswajit

Did u take any demo? If not, do so immediately.Only thing i can infer from the post is that u have made "lots of considerations" and ended up in more questions than answers. At the end of the day, its not my money/eyes....so, take a thorough demo, shortlist models again, crosscheck with ur budget and ask again here/pickup.

There is a stark contrast between Samsung and Sony's media playback capabilities as well via USB.Dunno, if u would be interested in that or looking at the PQ alone.

Edge led based tvs have no advantage in contrast. It does have low power consumption and is slimmer.

You are right about 3d its still in its early stages,we will see a lot of changes in the coming years with regard to 3d.

As far as the 2 tvs both are good, with the Sony EX520 you are guaranteed a SPVA panel,in the samsung you may get a inferior panel, although i haven't seen the D5900 series the rest of the D5xxx 40" had a AMVA panel which ain't really that bad.

The samsung however plays much more formants via USB.Sony probably has better online capability with a web browser although its painfully slow.

You can also check out the grey market where you can get them for a much lower price around 49k for the EX520.

@Imrahn - Thanks for the pointers.
Yes I took demo of both, what seemed to me is Samsung has a bit of yellowish tinge, which is not very bad it's actually soothing sometimes.
Sony on the other hand had an inclination towards Natural Colors.
Over all, PQ wise, I couldn't make a huge difference.

But honestly, in those 15 mins in the showroom you cannot look at all the aspects, and hence I was asking for some real life experience here.

HD Playback (using USB device) will definitely be one of the criteria, as I usually watch movies in that form rather than on actual Channels :). So did you mean sony is better here or Samsung? (Online watching is again another immatured area, reason why google is not going go go gaga about GoogleTV)

@adder - Thanks for the pointer towards the panel quality. and video formats.
Would not like to go with Black market though.

Samsung and LG has the clear edge over Sony in the USB playback department bro....they both play almost everything thrown at them. And if that's a priority for u,then Samsung could be ur answer if u don't have/plan to have a media player. The PQ is neck and neck between the models while my eyes preferred the Samsung one after a bit tweaking.Their colors are a tad stronger but contrasts are superb.

Pick the one that suits ur needs, but PQ wise,u won't be disappointed with either imho.

Regards

my requirement is same as biswajit's. Looking at this review and other threads, i think i will go with samasung 5900.
I also need a HT - which samsung model is good (below 20K range)

Also, i asked one of the dealer what would be the cost if i don;t need the blue ray - he mentioned he would give me 6K cash discount. Is this wise?

Which dealer is this? At Bangalore? Most others say there is 1 - 2K discount :)

BTW, I also read through some of the threads in Mouthshut to get a feeler, a lot of people have spoken against the Samsung service and also a lot of people had problems with the panel in a year or so.

If you are also considering these things.

Get that 6K discount and you can increase your budget for HT to buy Onkyo 3400 (25K). Don't buy anything less than this model.

Get samsung man, I am using it for the last 6 months and very happy with its performance and great connectivity options.

Hi Biswajit,

So, finally which model you selected out of Samsung 40D5900 and Sony 40EX520?
currently am also in the process of finalizing one among the two.
But could not able to select the right one because of getting different opinions.
some people are saying Samsung service is poor and Samsung panel is inferior than Sony's.
Yesterday i went to Adishwara (Marathahalli) in Bangalore and one sales guy suggested me to go for Sony 40EX520 and not Samsung.
So, bit confused which to go for.
I was reading the thread but did not conclude anything as there was no outcome of the topic.
Although somebody suggested you to go for either of the two, i would like to know which one you selected and what was the strong reason behind it.
Please share your thoughts which will help me and others to buy the right model.

Thanks,
Saroj

I am also in the same confusion. Pls let me know which one you bought and why?

I am also inclined towards Panasonic E-Series TH-L42E30D

Kindly share your thoughts.

Thx
Abhinav
