Hello. I am planning to pick up a 55 inch 4k tv. I already own minix neo u1 player which can play 4k and yamaha rx v681 which can upscale to 4k 60p. Now the question. .. if I buy the 4k tv will the yamaha rx upscale my full hd movies to 4k? If yes how good is the up scaling? How does one configure yamaha to do up scaling or is it by default when it notices a 4k capable tv at hdmi output?

Thanks

Dont think the Yammy will do it. Irs 'pass through' so the signal is simply passed along to the TV. Your TV will do it.

Video Features
4K Ultra HD Pass-through and upscaling Yes (4K / 60p 4:4:4)
HDMI 3D pass-through Yes
HDMI Audio Return Channel Yes
HDMI upscaling Yes (analog to HDMI, HDMI to HDMI)
Deep Color/x.v.Color/24Hz Refresh Rate /Auto Lip-Sync. Yes

These are from specs of 681. So I guess it does up scaling. Even if it does 4k pass through my minix can play 4k. So either way I should be able to feed 4k. Comments please

Yes.. the AVR should be able to do the job of upscaling to 4K..I dont use a 4K TV. so not sure how good it is.. But should do a decent job..

Check the HDMI/ video output settings in the AVR.. There must be an option to enable and disable it..

Also post the query in Yamaha owners thread.. YOu might get more responses from Yamaha AVR owners..

Yes this model does upscale so yes it will upscale 1080p to 4K, BUT how good it is, no one can tell and there is no way to judge it except to watch n compare. Upscaling depends on how good the algo is implemented. It differs from equipment to equipment

and I dont think there is any way to "configure" the scaling, its on by default and I also dont think there would be any way to even switch it off, you can try in HDMI settings.

Thanks. This means that either way I get 4k video to my tv whether the contents are 4k or not. If video being played by minix is 4k it simply passes through yamaha as 4k. If it is hd or full hd it gets upscaled to 4k by yamaha. Win win situation I guess.

I have noticed 4k out as greyed out when I see output video on yamaha. Does it imply it detects the tv capability to receive 4k? This I doubt.

Right.. Your understanding is correct..

No, you dont get "4k" if the content is not 4K, upscaling does not make 1080p to 4K. It just interpolates, which "will" result in some sort of PQ loss as compared to native 4K, how good the interpolation algo is; what makes all the difference. But don't expect magic, in all fairness you will not notice much of a difference between native 1080p movie and 1080p upscaled to 4K:) , in fact if the algo is pathetic (poor implementation), the PQ might deteriorate. (I dont think yamaha will be in that segment though)

I will not contest this. After all you cannot add missing information perfectly just like analog to digital and back to analog will not give you original analog. But it's just a step to get future ready and see 4k in its true sense as and when it comes

^^ Yes that it is , I just wont bank my expectations on upscaling too much,.... be native 4K as much as possible, that is where the display will truly shine ....:)

Precisely, in mid 2016 for a friend of mine, we did a side by side comparison of 1080p on 4k vs Full HD TV of LG, 1080p was very good with 1080p TV. Upscaled version wasn't impressive (lack of detail, more dark). Also the video with standard definition was much better on 1080p TV. We picked up the 1080p as our 4k content was almost non existing at the time.

This is worth a read

^^ Perfect example of the upscaling algo messed up ....:D, however if non upscaled 1080p is also looking bad on the 4K TV then the TV aint worth to consider at all.
