Hello! I am a new member just joined today. I have a Airtel HD DVR with Optial out and a Sony DVD Player with Digital Coaxial out. I would like to buy a 5.1 channel HT system compatible to both these devices. I have a Philips 5.1 ch Home theatre of 2006 model which has no optial or coaxial input. It gives just a 2.1 ch output when I connect to my devices. Any body can suggest a 5.1 HT system (without a DVD player) for my devices within a price rage of Rs.12k - Rs.15k. All the HD Channel in Airtel DTH are now offering 5.1/7.1 ch dolby system and I would like to take that benefit. Thanks

Generally the HTib from Sony and Philips don't have optical or HDMI input. Even if they had, what I have seen, the decoder can not render true 5.1 from external source. The only option is (considering your budget) to buy an HTiB from Denon or Yamaha or Onkyo. But @ 15k it will be very difficult.
For yamaha look here > Home Theater Packages - Yamaha - India
Or from Onkyo > Onkyo India

For movies, Onkyo is preferred. There are numerous threads on these models. Go through them.

If you could go a little more, YAMAHA 199 costs around 23K. You would get plenty of options under 15K in Sony, Phillips, LG but i strongly suggest to stay away from them. I hope you don't want to make recurring investments every few years to upgrade ur HT, so spend a little more now and you will enjoy it for a long time.
Check out YAMAHA, Pioneer, Onkyo. Just demo a Sony and any Yamaha/Onkyo/Pio and u will know the difference.
Airtel gives Dolby 5.1 output on HD channels. Get AVR which supports DD/DTS. You could start off with AVR and 2.1 setup and may be later upgrade it to 5.1, that can be an option if you dont want to spend more immediately.

P.S.: Consumer HTiBs like Sony have Player and Amp together, so its not a dedicated AVR. Besides, if anything fails you have to replace whole system.

I am agree with what skul82 has said.
but if you don't want to go for costliest one then you can check
recent HTIB from Philips which has HDMI Arc, Co-axial In, Optical In. You can check model HTS3541/51 or HTB5510D/94

Simply Get an Edifier model C6XD 5.1 speaker system at ~14K . It has optical input and will do the job. Ofcourse I am talking about minimum basic expenditure needed to solve the purpose. No long term vision here.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
