Hey guys...
As the title suggests, I am on the lookout for 5.1 speakers for my hostel room.
I am quite a n00b when it comes to speakers and I don't know anything about them.
My sources will be:
1. Lenovo Ideapad Y500
2. Xperia Z1
3. iPod Touch 4g
4. iPad Mini

Now, my questions are:

1. Suggest some good models around Rs. 10000.

2. Will I have to buy a sound card to get true 5.1 surround sound??? I don't want all of the speakers to play the same sound. It should be like in the movies where different sounds come from different speakers. Kinda like you have stereo for 2.0/2.1 setups, I want the equivalent for my 5.1 setup.

3. Feel free to suggest or recommend anything.

Pardon my n00bishness in this field!!!

I have been looking around and have found the following models:

1. Edifier DA5000 Pro
2. F&D F6000
3. F&D F6000U
4. F&D F5090

My order of perference is in the order 1>2>3>4

Please comment on which one is good or bad...

I have also realized that for getting 5.1 sound, I will require a usb sound card, for my laptop...

Will the following card work???

Also, my preference for the speakers will be Movies>>Gaming>>Music. Thus I need the 5.1 and not the 2.1.

My hostel room specifications are around 12 feet x 20 feet if that is required.

Anything else I need to know like what the connections will be, what the wires will be??? Feel free to suggest anything... :D

Edifier is the only option in 10k. F&D is not up to the mark.
What is your source of movies? if it is Downloaded Rips then you need to have 5.1 ac3 audio in these rips in order to have multi channel audio(separate sound from individual speakers). If your source has stereo audio then 5.1 speaker is not recommended.

For hostel rooms and to use with laptop/tabs etc 2.1 is the best. You will get lot of quality 2.1 speakers in 10k. 2.1 will be better for music too.

Get Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 or Boston Accoustic Digital Cinema 2.1 around 13k. It will blow any 5.1 in this range.

You need a capable sound card to get real 5.1 sound unless the speaker has a built in receiving processing input. If you are playing music, it would be very difficult to have music coming out of 5.1 as the music was recorded in stereo. To get real 5.1 you need a 5.1 sound stream from supporting sound games,DVD or Blue ray. However there are many softwares which can simulate/force sound to come from all speakers giving a virtual effect. The quality is not good as real 5.1 sound stream. However this can also be achieved by good 2.1 speakers than bad 5.1 speakers.

If you choose to go with good 5.1 sound (might be an over kill in your hostel room) and want good surround sound with movies, get good source, good sound card and good speakers. However this is unlikely to be possible in 10k of your budget.

If possible visit some shops and listen to some speakers sound.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
