Having just started testing the waters for a for a friend,(and possibly myself) who wants a 65" /70" TV, costing less than 1.75l, I realised that there are several models, that do not come under the radar while doing the usual search of manufactures and online stores.

My friend, who is a retired person, would prefer a LED,(economy/ease of use) though he is not ruling out Plasma, on my recommendation.

I would request everyone to please inform /list all the TVs that are available for sale in India, that can be included using this price criteria. Among the TVs that I found include:

1. Samsung PF 648500
2. Panasonic TC-L65E60
3. Videocon VJF65 PA-XS

Please also indicate if you know why a particular TV should NOT be considered. Thank you !

No specific personal experience but videocon can be excluded from the above list. Similarly stay away from VU and Toshiba basis of exp of my friends....I own a panny 65VT30 hence would definitely recommend plasma ...648500 from above list and moreso if you can get your hands on 65ST50 ...should be in the price range mentioned by you

if your budget is 1.75L, you might be able to get the samsung flagship plasma of this year. but if it is 1.5, panasonic P60S60 is probably your best bet. ensure some budget for buying an extended warranty, or maybe an insurance.

Yester i had been to one of the Samsung showroom's in chennai...Accidentally saw the 64F8500 Plasma.... What a televesion it is.... Absolutely gorgeous, Briiliant colours, Looks massive, Superb blacks.....Never seen anything like that before :ohyeah:

I am extremely excited after watching a TV... Will defenetly get the 51inches if Samsung plans to launch it in India.....:clapping:

Try to demo all the TV that you have mentioned and you will find yourself the difference....

Thank you all. Would be nice if anyone can unearth some more models to choose from. I am told Sharp does have a few sets, as well as some others in the Grey market.

Illusion Heart, Toshiba has not made a name for itself here in India: it is a good brand, and in fact, I had got my first LCD, a Toshiba 39" around 2001, and that set still works at my friends place, to whom I sold it while returning to India. So also my lap top, 6 years old and still going strong, as a also my 500GB HD. I agree, there might be the odd problem, but usually Toshiba products are reliable.

On a side note, would anyone here know, with reasonable certainty, when we can expect the prices to drop for the current models in the market ?

My friend is reluctant to go beyond the 1.5l budget : in fact, he is more inclined to keep his costs around 1.25l , but this at this point in time, it would mean he gets a 60" set. He is in no rush to get the bigger TV and is prepared to wait a couple of months.

Had a look around a few shops in the city today, and apart from the usual models, I was informed that Haier also does have some budget 60" sets, but no one had any in stock. Just cannot understand why they have marked up the bigger size sets especially the LED/LCD to such levels. Do they really have so many customers at that price bracket ? Even the Samsung 64F8500, the difference in price vis a vis other 55/50" Plasma sets are staggering.

Yes the prices are staggering..... If you are looking for a TV between 50 - 60 inches, the bare minimum that you need to spend is a Lakh rupees.... Increase in Dollar price is an other factor that these marketing ppl take advantage of....

Until & unless some company like Micromax/Lava mobiles starts production in India, we will be easily taken for a ride:sad:

Sharp 60 inch 3d lcd where available in sharp exclusive stores.I'm not sure about the price but if bargained it would be FM.

The price is for the product offered, with the features and options. In the budget your friend should go for Panasonic 60S60 and not waste time hunting around as there is no other option in that budget. It's better to stay away from the Videocon's, the Sharp and Toshiba's. Also their big sizes are difficult to find in the market. Tell him to audition the 60s60 set ,post which he can take a call. the 64f8500 is a flagship model and the lowest price i got in Bangalore was 1.73 lakhs.

+1 to the above suggestion.
Panasonic 60S60 is the best fit in that budget if 3D is not needed.

I guess a good LED even in 55inches will be beyond that budget.

Does any one have more information on Panasonic TC-L65E60 , I came across this marked @1,62,000 on Compare India. Cannot get a response from the site and Panasonic too, does not mention anything about this set. Thanks.

Thanks Dushie, I did see/ read a few reviews on Cnet etc. What I was looking for is WHo stocks this set in India and how CompareIndia got a price of 1.62L on their site, when no one else seems to know about or stock the set( including Panasonic)

Would not recommend to purchase the TV online. Call the panasonic brandshop or other authorized dealers in your city for availability and other options.

There are a few 60" LED/LCD sets in the market but all above 1 L . There may be the odd Sharp or less known brand available for around 1.10L (saw one at ezone) however the Pic quality and connections are on the lower side ( 1HDMI Port) etc.
Plasma once offered Larger screens at the lowest prices, upto when 50/55" was considered huge. Samsung seems to have turned this around with their Top Line 64 F8500- which they have successfully marketed at more than double the price of their smaller models.

Subhash, if you read closely Naaptol says they do not have stock of the model you listed, and unless you are willing to risk buying a set from the Grey market, you will have not much choice.
