Hello Friends,
Would like to know about the 6N2P tubes. Tube rolling seems to give some freedom experimenting with tubes. My query is in same regards.

Thanks in advance!

6n2p / 12ax7 / ecc83
Errr..not fully pin compatible Sir. The heater wiring is a little different. You will need to rewire accordingly but that is a minor thing.

That said the russi fauji 6N2P are much better than at least 95% of standard ECC83's (NOS or otherwise) except some very highly regraded versions.

Fully recommended.

Yes the same tube. Americans call them 12AX7 and the Brits call them ECC83. But the russian 6N2P while being similar differs on the heater pin out.

Rohit, I believe AKS has answered your question. The 6N2P is not an exact replacement for the ECC83/12AX7.

Thanks everyone for the kind inputs! :)

Actually I already have an tube pre (AP swara pre) which have the 6N2P tubes.
So are the upgrade opportunities for better tubes that would make a significant difference to the sound thanks to tube rolling.

Capt Rajesh Sir, I think you had tried tube rolling with your DAC not sure of the pre though.

There are 3 6N2P tubes part of the pre. Is it worth to try tube rolling? Would it make a big difference? If yes can you suggest some tubes?

What are the characteristics affected by tubes?

P.S: I am new to tube rolling.

Rohitmusic,

You can try the 6N2P EV tubes which are some sort of ruggedized/improved version, I don't remember much right now. Though am guessing you won't see too much of a change rolling tubes in your particular situation compared to lets say having the opportunity to roll ecc83s which have a rich and varied stock of tubes to choose from. There are russian and chinese versions of your tube available.

The characteristics affected by rolling include changes in trebe/bass/presentation/warmth/linearity/clarity/detail etc depending on tube brand.

Regards

Wow.. That's a lot of parameters getting affected! Interesting...

Stevieboy has answered your query wonderfully well. I can't add any more to it.

how about giving some more info. what is it, amp, pre, phonostage?? do you have a schematic. is it diy or commercial?

Rohit I had contacted Siva of AP some weeks ago on this same topic for my PM1 Valve Pre. I don't know if the same tubes are used for the Swara but he felt that it was not worth the effort. In Siva's words "These tubes (the 6N2P russian tubes) are far superior to any 12AX7 that we have used in the preamp (both new and NOS like Mullard)."

I would say the best advice you can get is to write to AP since I am not sure on the differences between the Swara and the PM1 amps.

My 0.02

Oh! Thanks Nikhil for the direct inputs! Nice to know that these tubes are good. :)
Now I simply need to confirm if they are same tubes.

I remember listening to Dr Bass's AP PM1 with expensive NOS ECC 83 tubes and later he switched to 6N2P. The sound of pre with 6N2P was far superior.

rohit, as others have already said before me ... the 6N2P Russian tubes are very good.
If that is what you have I wouldn't bother with them for the moment.

Yes Nikhil, true. I had heard a lot about tube rolling so was curious to know what it is all about. Nice to know I dont need to :)

Not saying you don't need to. But really unless something comes along that really "blows the doors of the wagon" so to speak you need not worry.
In this hobby though you can never really say.
