Hello FMs,

Starting this thread to put on display some old pieces of history that fascinates me and may be will generate some interest among you guys too.

What I have in store for here is the Bill of our first turntable/ record player. With it, I am also posting the Guarantee card & Owner's manual's scanned copy too. What should add some spice to it is the fact that these papers are more than 38 years old! Hope you guys will like them!

I would also like to request all my fellow members to post any such interesting documents/ papers/ manuals relating to turntables that they might be having.

Thank you for looking!

Regards,
Saket

Saket,

The invoice, guarantee card etc are valuable records worth preserving. It reminds me of my college days when my father bought a Philips portable record player and a valve radio of the same brand.

Very True! Its actual value is recognized only when they turn as old as our turntables.

Will be glad to have a look if you too have such records.

I handed over our NAD 1020A preamp in its original box, with its original user manual and warranty card from 1984, to one of our forum members. You won't believe this but the user manual and warranty card actually smelt exactly the same, how it was when that box was first opened at home :)

Quite a nostalgic experience innit!

I have some LPs which my friends gave me, and some of them dated back to the 1950s have small messages written on them. Such lovely messages and lovely handwriting I must say. Gives me a feeling of how people enjoyed their get-togethers back in those days. Today its with Scotch or a Wine Bottle but then it used to be with a Vinyl as a gift :)

Thanks Reuben for sharing the NAD 'experience'. Enjoy your stay in US & do let us know if you carry some vinyls back to India!

Will also like to tell that the bill (in the first pic) tells that the HMV Fiesta used to cost Rs. 460/- in February 1975 which included a Sales Tax of about 17%.
Now Rs. 460/- in 1975; I think it was considerable... What do you guys say?

Thanks.

Nowadays, LP sleeves costs more than 460/-

Also, hope you have posted the Photos of Sir Garrad 301 in the Showcase your Turntable thread.

I have an LP of Pete Seeger's "Banks of marble" bearing the inscription "Pritish Nandy, London, 1978"

Most of the vintage equipment that we've owned over the years was second-hand, so we never had any bills to preserve. But I'm pretty sure I have owner's manuals and warranty cards for at least a couple of Akai reel-to-reel decks, and a Sony reel-cassette combo machine from the mid-70s.

Some years ago we got a lot of reel tapes from a gentleman who worked with AIR in Chennai. Among these were several 5" reels that seemed to be specifically manufactured for the company - the brand was "All India Radio recording tape".

I guess Rs. 460 would have been around 2 months salary for a moderate level government employee back then, probably equivalent to around 40k or something now?

:eek: Would have fetched an SL1200??
Just thinking how much the 1200 costed that time then?

Heh. This is strictly an educated guess, based on random memories of Hindi films of the period saying "Tumhari tankhwa teen sau rupaye mahine hogi. Kal se naukri par aa jana"
