Hi All,

This is my first post here and in anticipation of useful advice and opinions!

I am from Delhi and a novice when it comes to AV receivers and speakers however I have done some googling hence I have gotten some idea about how it all works! I am keen to have a 5.1 HT system in my house with a good AV receiver. But, Since I am very tight on budget I would like to start with 2.1 system comprising of good bookshelf speakers and SW for Yamaha RX V573/473 which I have shortlisted. I would expand it to 7.1/5.1 later when my pocket allows for it.

I am a music buff more than movies:
Music - 80% - Rock/Soft Rock/Sufi
Movies - 20% (DVD/Tatasky HD)

For speakers, I have zeroed down on following (basis only specs as of now):
Budget is 10-15 K

Room size 20 x 15 or something...not sure..,Its more rectangular.
Boston Acoustics Classic CS26
Polk Audio TSi200
Whaferdale Diamond 10.1

For SW: (Budgets around 15K)
Polk PSW 110
Sonodyne Roarr 210

Pls let me know which one one goes best with Yamaha receiver I have picked.

I would also like to know where I can buy in Delhi with good deals. I have read on posts here that readers have gotten good deals (10-20% discount on MRP). Basically where can i bargain good. (No grey market stuff).

Thanks in advance!
Raj

consider sonodyne booksheves and center also.but please demo it in a showroom with the same avr.
sonodyne 1501 is little bright.
c2401 is good with yamaha.

Yamaha has a somewhat bright sound signature, my Sonodyne 1501s seem a little bright with my Yamaha. I am not sure if that is due to the speakers being bright themselves. However everyone seems to be of the opinion that Yamaha has a bright sound signature.

The 1501s with my Yamaha 371 are not unbearably bright though, they can be lived with. For me the sound is pretty clean, and they do a nice job in movies as well.

Thanks Manu and Shibhashis....I will definitely audition what you have suggested. However, I shortlisted those speakers totally based on review online and obviously my budget.

Pls, if you have any exp of Polk TSI with Yamaha or Wharfdale...would really appreciate it.

I need clearer sound (I am not going to play it too loud) and tight bass...

Also, can you also please let me know what 'bright' actually means. Have read it many times here but need to get clarity on this.

Thanks again!

The terms "bright", "neutral", and "dull/flat" describe how a speaker or electronics component colors the sound. Ideally, a "neutral" speaker or electronic component would not color the sound in any way, thus giving the listener the most accurate representation of the original recording possible. A "bright" speaker or electronic component generally describes too much energy on the mid to upper frequency range

I am using Yamaha RX-V471 with Dali Ikon 6 as fronts and Dali Concept Center. People are surprised with this combination, but I don't think it is bright. Yes, it has a top zing and sparkle which is good for watching movies if you want to enjoy all kinds of sound effects. Although I don't use it for music listening usually, but, I found Yamaha a more airy (not bright) performer compared to Denon 1612. Earlier I used to have a Denon + Polk TSi300 combo and found it very sibilant and bright. Sound signatures are a very subjective matter.

I think Yamaha 473 will be an excellent choice and feel free to partner it with Polk Audio also, but I won't advice it, because, it deserves better. Go for Dali Zensor or Concept series. Another example of wrong market perceptions - I added the Concept Center later and found that the pairing to be bright and sibilant. I started to think that maybe yamaha + Dali is bright. Whatever refinement in top end I was hearing earlier was due to the much more refined Ikon speakers. But, recently I realized that I am using a Rs.25/m cable for center and a Rs.2400/m cable for fronts. I cut a half meter length of the Atlas Hyper 3.0 for the center also and found a 300% improvement.

So don't go by market perceptions. A lot of things affect sound signature. Pick one part of the equipment, preferably AVR and take it to different speaker dealers and make a practical choice.

That was very helpful Manu..

So ...whats your experience abt Wharfs 10.1....or what would u suggest...I like more bass (tight)....less treble....do wharfs fit the bill?

I am having a similar combo Yammy 571 + Dali concepts.

After reading a lot in this forum about bright speakers/warm speakers, I was not sure which speaker to go for my 571 that I had already.

I just took the demo of the diff. combination before buying and only after liking a certain sound type, I went for this combo. The other speakers I auditioned with 571 were polk Tsi(found little bright compared to Dali), Wharfedale(liked it but found details(esp midrange) better in Dali concept).

Yes, dont go for any popular combination (like denon + polk etc). Hear it for yourself and buy whatever sounds good to your ears/your wallet allows :)

I use PSW 125 with Denon receiver and Mission speakers. I find Polk 125 is good in a medium room, espesially for music. Enough boom for movies also.

Polk can be sourced in Delhi from Bass n Treble at Guitorni.

i am currently using the paradigm monitors with my yamaha 473. Awesome combo for movies. For music the sounds a bit on the brighter side imho. The yamaha's are a bit on the brighter side which makes em fantastic to my ears for movies. For music i feel the avr should be as neutral as possible.

======

sorry i just read your speaker budget. The wharfs are nice at that price range but not too gr8 for music when i had connected em to my 473.
We recently heard smd's speakers at the mumbai audio meet. They fit perfectly in ur budget and requirement. Maybe you should have a listen

What's the cost of these monitors? Are you referring to mini-monitors?

yup, mini monitors. Atom monitors should be around 20k mark, but im not sure how loud would they be. If the rooms small, you could give em a try.

I have also heard gr8 things about the Qacoustics 2010i. Try em...

Can you please give a little more details about those speakers...I think I will go to Chandni Chowk (Lajpat rai mkt) and then audition them all that i shortlisted with Yamaha 473....

Thanks all for your inputs...More would be welcome!!!

Thanks a lot of this valuable info. Since Its going to be my first time into Hi FI audio....i have a question...do i need to buy separate cables for speakers or they come with cables? If seperate cables...what make/type would you suggest...and with what connection type?

Raj.

More details in what sense?

The r very easy to drive with almost any amp, on the brighter side. Similar to kef q300. A little bass shy but then the speakers you mentioned have even lesser bass.
The thing is that to my ears, some vocals seem to be a touch laid back. As in they aint too prominent and the music kinda takes over vocals. Not sure if its to do with the amp or speakers. Hence i said gr8 for movies, not so gr8 for music via a yamaha 473

I connected a combo of 4 Contol Ones, 1 Control Now and a 140P Sub, all from JBL, to my Yamaha Rx-V373, and the resulting effect is awesome !!

You may also audition Polk TL1600 or Polk TL 2600 packages. They r WFM. I use TL1500 speakers set with PSW 125 and Yammy RX-471. At your price point, I believe this is nice stuff for you to consider.
