I have an ancient but good amplifier, from the late 1980s, a Rotel RA-820BX2, which served me well for many years. I haven't used it for a long while now, but I'd like to bring it back into action. Having tried it out now, it seems that it is now outputting just in mono instead of stereo (i.e., the same signal is sent to both speakers). Any idea why that might be? Is it the sort of thing which would likely to be expensive (and maybe cost-prohibitive) to repair, or might it just require a squirt of contact cleaner somewhere. Also, the headphone socket is no longer effective, in that plugging headphones into it no longer cuts out the output to the speakers.

Forget that! It seems to have sorted itself out, goodness knows how. Still have the headphone socket issue, though.

Input selector and headphone socket are the only suspects for this symptom, assuming all your cables, the headphones and headphone plug, and the source, are fine. Amplifiers that feature a stereo/mono switch also demonstrate this issue if the stereo/mono switch malfunctions.
