Hello Friends,
I am new to the Hifi vision. I want to know about the frequency response in the amplifiers. some amps have 20hz to 20000hz and some have 5hz to 100 khz what is the difference. Which amplifier is good?. I know that our hearing ability is between 20hz to 20khz. Then why there are amplifiers having 5hz to 100 khz. Pls anyone clarify my doubt.

Though the human hearing is between 20hz - 20Khz, it is said that you can feel anything below 20Hz.. Especially with movies (or) music if that goes that low..

What amplifiers are you comparing ?..

The op knows that humans cannot hear beyond 20hz to 20khz, he wants to know 'WHY"? Personally i think because they can, so they will.Why make a car go from 0 to 60mph in 3.9 secs? Because they CAN.:p

One of the reasons modern day amplifiers support between 20 hz to 20khz is because, some have subwoofer pre-out capability, which can handle below 20Hz, dependning on the capability of the subwoofer..
 
To me, these figures tell you how dynamic the amp is.So ideally 5hz to 100hz amp can handle audible frequencies (20hz-20khz) more easily.Some speakers also has specs like 30khz which actually is not audible.
 
Basically the amp design is capable of handling such a wide frequency response 5hz to 100khz even if you cannot hear it.
Sometimes they are just marketing gimmicks when advertised as such.

Well....the others have already responded to your query.....noticed your signature that you have different amps, I am sure you would have noticed difference in sound signature and punch...use the same source and speakers and try it if not done.

my take is the following:

  • Marketing gimmick by some brands besides claiming tall RMS outputs
  • Built quality and proper efficient amps.
  • Endless articles over the internet and even forums.
  • Amps that can perform across a broader spectrum of frequencies are good (provided its built well etc).
 
though you cannot hear anything below 20Hz bass at subsonic level is felt than heard. So the lower the better. But you also need to know how many watts the amp can supply at what resistance. Say you have a 4 ohm speaker does your amp have the capability to provide the current to run that speaker. Another important thing is damping factor of amps that equates to how well your amp can control your bass drivers in your speaker.

It is possible to design an amplifier with a broader frequency response.
A broader response doesn't mean good, it depends on how flat the amplifier can play all the way from 5hz to 100khz.
There are rare cases where an amplifier really does play flat from 5hz to 100khz.
