Peter Aczel: What I have learned after six decades in audio

… reading back from the beginning of this discussion, I have a sense that collectively we have made a breakthrough standing on the shoulders of giants and mavericks of audiophilia, as also our wisdom.

Now I am wondering if I had a pair of open baffle speakers would the room become the box? 🤔

Thats perhaps thinking too much out of the Box :D . I would assume no unless you put the speakers recessed into the walls as they used to many years back ..and then the room is the box and you are in the box .

Speaker makers here can correct/add but for all the baffle here is the key in defining bass and tone, the remaining part of the box is mostly on how the air pressure and rear waves are contained. perhaps thats why the openness and transparency of an OB os far higher but at the expense of midrange tonality and bass and there are many flavours to the balance based in drivers and baffle sizes...and of course placement.

Can’t help myself as I am expecting a pair of OBs soon and I am very curious about the differences between the boxed designs and open (dipole?) designs vis a vis the room interactions. (Not referring to panel/electrostats here)
Let’s wait for some OB speaker users to weigh in with their thoughts and insights.

OBs have their own strengths..if you like that sound you may never hear a box speaker if thats your thing.

I have extensively listened to pure audio project loudspeakers a few times. If placed right, every layer in the musical event will reach your ears without any distortion element that "could" come from a box. I used the word "could" because there are brands who can take the box completely out of the equation using clever and usually expensive methods while leveraging the benefits of boxes to the design's advantage.

I love open baffle loudspeakers. Also, the dipole behavior creates a unique soundfield that makes it quite immersive and engaging. Because of the dipole behavior, to leverage the benefits, I think you need a decent room with reasonably good acoustic properties to gain the benefits. Placed properly in such a room, the speakers create magic.

Most boxed speakers will sound a little boxy in comparison.

Thanks. The elephant in the room is (wrt speaker placement) is… the room itself.
I have been in a email conversation with Ze’ev of Pure Audio Project about the duet 15 which can be couriered to India. The uncertainty about the cost of customs duty amount has made me hesitant about taking the plunge.
Any owners of Duet 15 here? Please share your experience in buying and impressions of the sound it reproduces

You need space for these speakers both behind and in front of them hence 4-5 feet behind and seating 8-10 feet away hence you need a largish room else you will not get the benefit of the OB
Smaller drivers like 5-6inch OBs would be easier but I think the baffle sizes are much larger.

I am thinking of taking over greenland, oops! Sorry. The front living room. It’s plenty large enough for the Duet 15s.
But I am getting ahead of myself 😎

Thought as much but wanted to get clarification nevertheless as someone reported your post as rude and was trying to resolve the issue. Oh yes I'm aware of that controversial character; Peter Aczel.
Cancel culture has permeated the Indian zeitgeist as well.
