Folks, Need your help once more as always :)

I got a handful of old Vinyl records from my relative. I just wanted to tryout and begin my Vinyl journey.

Just wanted your recommendation of any good Budget Vinyl player, something like Denon DP29F.

Also, a best place to buy it in Chennai that you can recommend.

Appreciate your help.

Welcome to this crazy Vinyl Club :)

As you want to start your journey with Vinyl, I would strongly recommend you go in for a vintage vinyl player. This will really add to the entire experience of vinyl. Many from here will recommend the same. You can try getting yourself a vintage Technics Direct Drive TT, Akai, Pioneer or even a Philips. You can probably get one within the 8-10k range. You will also need a decent Phonostage.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

+1 to the above comments and they are words of wisdom spoken from experience.

There is another school of thought however, if you have no experience whatsoever with vinyl and just happened to get a few old records, you probably would have read online that vinyl sounds the best and obviously, you are interested to explore (since you mentioned "try out"). In such circumstances, you'd need to be careful as to achieve cd-like perfection, you'd have to use a decent turntable, cartridge, phonostage and of course, vinyl in pristine condition. The budget for which can range anywhere between Rs.10k and Rs.300k. If you want to "try out", not a bad idea to start with something at the lowest price point and upgrade as you go. The beauty about vinyl is that there is somebody starting out every single day, so getting rid of old gear is never a problem, at absolutely all price points. Players like the denon which you mentioned generally come with inbuilt phonostages and with OEM cartridges, hence you'd just need to plug and play. However must mention that phonostages at entry level are no big deal and can be built for a few hundreds. On another note, phonostages, like DACs are perhaps the most exotically priced gear in the business :)

All the very best for your journey.

All the above are words of wisdom from very experienced people. Coming to the reasonably good players, I can say that a Philips 242 would cost you around 6,000 but you may have to buy a new cart costing around 4000-5000. You can buy Thorens TD 160 and the budget should be around 30K without a good cart. You also have some Akais and a few Technics also within this price. There are many TTs which keep coming up for sale on the Forum. Kindly check with FM Shafic who may have something for you. All the best.

hey, where do you stay?
suggest chennai musical antiques in chromepet or moore market.
but take someone who knows stuff with you.

my next couple of weekends are booked. else would have offered

Thanks Greenhorn! Where exactly is this place in Chromepet. I am familiar with that area as my relatives are there and visit once a while.

BTW, what is this Cheapstake audiophile society ? is there a website/forum I can checkout ?

Hi Indy70,

I am from Mumbai and also on the lookout for turntables. Even I got a few records along with a cheap TT (under$100).
Can someone guide me for purchasing a decent TT in Mumbai.

Get the entry level marantz TT for about 13000, fully automatic and a great start to ur vinyl world.
