Folks, Need your help once more as always :)

I got a handful of old Vinyl records from my relative. I just wanted to tryout and begin my Vinyl journey.

Just wanted your recommendation of any good Budget Vinyl player, something like Denon DP29F.

Also, a best place to buy it in Chennai that you can recommend.

Appreciate your help.

Most of us , vinyl lovers are opting for vinyl than CD, to hear pure analogue recording.
But when we go for cheap used players, most of the time the sound output even from best vinyls will be horrible.
I think, to start with go for a decent player, otherwise you will hate the vinyl sound.

+1

there is no doubt that the better the equipment, the better the results, but at a price of course :)

Thanks for all the advice guys. I have shortlisted Audio Technica AT-LP60 player which seems on the budget and good enough for beginner. It is there in the US for $100, but unfortunately doesn't seem to be available in India (Directly) :( . So I need to see if I can get it from someone from US.

On the side, I am also trying to see if I can lay my hands on any Cassette deck player :) I have some bunch of old cassettes and the bug has bitten me to try it out. I think I should visit Ritchie street once, to try my luck and options.

I see Mohan Musical mentioned here in the forum a few times. Gotta try !

Meanwhile, please let me know if Audio Technica AT-LP60 is somehow available for direct purchase in India.

A couple of years ago my relative in USA was keen on Audio Technica AT-LP60 and wanted my opinion. Ebay was selling it new for US$ 75. That means the US wholesaler must be sourcing it for about US$ 50 and the factory in China must be churning it out for about US$ 20.

To put things in perspective a good record cleaning brush like the Oki Noki Goat Hair sells for approx US$ 45.

Do give us your feedback when you buy the AT LP60. Really want to know just how badly it damages your records.

As for me it would have been a midrange vintage TT + CNC phono as other esteemed members have suggested. The Sale thread often throws up great values. You can be in business for lesser amount then what Audio Technica AT-LP60 would cost.

I am using AT LP60 from the last two years. I bought it from US and landed cost was approx. 9K. Bought a step down 240 to 120V adaptor from ebay for 150 Rs. Started with 2 vinyl records - Marasim and Norah Jones Come away with me (you never forget your first vinyl purchase I guess) and now I have a collection of approx. 200 records. I listen to it almost everyday for 1-2 hours and records are still in mint condition without any pops and crackles. I make sure that stylus and records are clean before playing. I think AT LP60 is a great start to vinyl journey and a very good sounding machine. My original stylus was still working but I changed it to replacement stylus and it sounds even better with greater midrange and better bass.

I am using my Marantz PM5004's phono though inbuilt phono is decent enough. I must admit I had not very high expectations when I bought it due to various discussions in the forum related to high end TTs or vintage TTs performances. May be due to that when I heard the first record I was amazed with its performance. Now it is a part of me. Everybody in the house is in love with this low profile TT. Before that I auditioned Denon DP29F, Marantz XX5005 TT and I did not like them.

I am sure vintage TTs are great but there may be issues related speed, cart, belt, expensive stylus and I do not have the capability or means to fix that.

Based on my personal experience, AT LP60 is a great entry level turntable that do not cost you a bomb. So far I am happy with its performance.

Thanks,
Vinay

you can post your requirement on dlx or quikr. I did and goy quite a few responses from Mumbai. It will be of benefit as you can go across to the seller and check for its performance. I think there were a few Garrards also up for sale, You could also check shops in Lamington road. Rhythm House in Colaba and Hiro music house Kala Ghoda used to sell them. :):)

In my opinion, there is no shame in making a start at any price point. We all have to make a start somewhere. If you have prior experience with vinyl, like your Dad owned and listened to vinyl, etc then it makes sense to go up the chain straight away. If you are a rank-outsider and coming to the medium for the very first time, then its better to start at the bottom end. The journey is less painful as most of the entry level players are plug and play. Also the investment is not high so if you are not happy, you can easily exit. Also a lot of the starters have used vinyl and playing these on entry level TTs can actually sound nice as the carts, phonostages, etc are not that great and don't reproduce everything on the record, genuinely. This can sometimes be an advantage as a lot of the surface noise, ticks and pops, etc are less evident in the eventual sound.

When you start at the lower end, you will automatically get familiar with your TT's limitations in performance and sound and after a point, you will start reading more and attempt tweaks. This phase is highly educative and will help you master the medium. Once you have accepted the medium and decide that you need to go higher (and of course have the budget for it), then go in for better stuff.

To get great sounding vinyl, you'd need a good TT, good cart, good phonostage, decent amp, good speakers, and most importantly a great set of records in pristine condition. Even if your records are in pristine condition, the quality of the pressing can vary, causing significant differences in performance. To get this entire chain right, you'd either need a lot of experience or a lot of money, or both :)

After travelling the entire distance with TTs of different varieties and at different price points, I still find music played on entry-level TTs, very enjoyable.

Thanks Reuben, That was a worthy advice. Yes I will be a total newbie to Vinyl listening. But cassettes, I had lived through that era. So I am thinking to dust off my old cassettes and see if I can get hold of a good cassette deck !

TT, Cassette deck whichever seeks me first. Just want to taste Analog again, somehow felt analog sound in cassettes had quivering life in it.

Unfortunately, both Hero Music House and Rhythm House are closed now for ever! They could not compete with the online deluge.

Also, to add to above, I've not seen any shop in Lamington Road that sells anything vinyl (except Electronic Emporium that sells Shure cartridges).

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
