I am new to this forum and I am interested as to what type of electronics are available in India...., in general.

Can anyone inform me?

Thank You

Ivey

A lot of stuff is available in India including many of the big hi fi brands. There are a few who sell their stuff at reasonable prices in India, which are comparable to prices in the US, such as Usher, and then there are people like B&W who charge about double of what their stuff costs in the US/UK.

Generally you are better off buying Hifi gear in the US. Here most things a premium of 70% over US MRP. Except a few that a previous poster pointed out.

Then there are local options for local FullRange speakers like Audire, Precious Jewels That Sing that promise to be world class.

10. LFD Audio

Ivey, let me give you a general idea covering a much broader area:

1. In the area of mobile telephony, we are the largest consumers and users of mobile telephony in the world second to China. India has a completely digital system, and we have just started experimenting with 3G.

2. In the area of TV, we have switched over completely to satellite based transmission. The last mile distribution is either through a dish atop your own house, or through cable operators who receive the satellite transmission and send it to your house through cables. Most of the TV channels are SD, but some channel have started experimenting with HD.

3. In the area of medical electronics, we use the latest MRI and other instruments, though most medical electronics are imported. India is supposed to be one of the countries leading in medical services. There are hospitals that do something like 100 open heart surgeries a day! India is becoming a popular medical destination for the Middle East and most European countries.

4. We are slowly switching over to LCDs and Plasma TVs. Companies such as Panasonic, Hitachi, Samsung, LG and others have assembling plants in India. In terms of features, we would be, maybe, 12 months behind other countries. This is because the offtake of LCD and Plasmas in not large enough compared to CRT that yet sell in large numbers. By next year, this gap will close.

5. In the area of AVRs we are on par with the world, and we get the latest AVRs from the four main players - Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, and Marantz literally the same day it is released anywhere in the world.

6. Companies such as Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, Cambridge Audio, NAD, Arcam, Pioneer and others are very active here. I would say these companies fulfill more than 80% of the market requirements.

7. Similarly in the world of speakers, companies such as Wharfedale, Jamo, Mordaunt-Short, do very active business. Again these are perceived to be inexpensive and to deliver tremendous value for money.

8. Two channel market is kind of hard to judge. Most mass market consumers use an AVR for two channel amplification, and use either an DVD Player or an MP3 player as source. There is a small and possibly growing market for audiophiles who use specialised two channels sources and amplification. This is covered by companies such as Arcam, Cyrus, B&W, Parasound, Primare, Dynaudio, Creek, Plinius, Meridian and others cover.

9. There is also a small but growing market for audiophiles who use computer based source. This is clearly in two segments. The larger ones are those who use the media players for movies and music and use it as part of their home network.

A small segment use a specialised PC and an external DAC for two channel amplification. These people stick to FLAC or WAV type files which they rip themselves.

10. Finally Indian has a small segment of local manufacturers who cover two channel amplification, DVD Players, TVs, speakers and other electronics. Some cater to mass market and some do very specialised manufacturing using the best available parts and design in the world.

Cheers

Why should you feel anything other than being proud of yourselves? People with knowledge and understanding are always ahead of everybody else and take risks that others hesitate to. Such people are called 'leaders', right?

I had no idea, until I joined this forum, how very much hifi is actually available in India until I joined this forum
By your count Venkat I am a minority since my stuff falls into 4 8 and 9 points. Should I be happy to feeling like crap? :)
And I am in the even smaller minority that believes in PC without external DAC.

For computers and components, I don't think we lag behind at all, and the standard stuff is not particularly more expensive either. It is true that the M-Audio speakers and the Echo Audiofire interface on my desk were bought in Singapore. They could both have been sourced in India, probably even in my home city: they were much cheaper in Singapore. The computer case and contents were all sourced within a short drive, and without any feeling of being restricted by being in India.

In terms of consumer/household/etc items, I often encounter the advice, "don't worry: everything is available here." Well, yes, mostly it is, but still there are different values of "everything" and what is missing is the huge profusion of choice. Actually, not having fifty brands of washing powder to choose from is quite refreshing!

(My background is seven years shopping in India, fifty-plus years shopping in UK)

if youre looking at general electronic products you would get just about anything over here. made in india / china / taiwan sort of products would cost you similar to what you would pay in america. american and european brands are generally more expensive over here than america. if you're specifically looking for audio diy, then there is stuff thats available here though not in the same range as america would have. have no idea about their pricing

I suppose you guys realise its a year old query posted by someone who probably isnt in the forum, so answering may not make sense.
Yeah, I was wondering too. It is more than 1 year and eight months old. Not talking about this thread but there are lots of thread where original poster has not bothered to update from room recommendations, to non working audio stuff, to purchase etc. They should but they dont.
