Recently, after searching for a media player, I finally bought the HDP-R1 ...The reason being, the mini is now available around 4.2k ..the R1 I got for ~ 4.5 k...
The big advantage of the R1 is the network capability ..To add new life into the R1, I have flashed it with new custom firmware which has given it youtube, Opera and ability to add tons of IPTV channels ...Also, for the more geeky folks, ASUS has released the full source for the software..It is a stripped down linux distro .SO you could compile the kernel and also modules for USB wifi adapters ..
I used the HD2 firmware from this site ..
amp_r8
The procedure itself is very simple ...First flash to get to bootcode 23 ..Then flash the amp_r8 firmware ..I first tried the playonHD skin ..It was laggy and youtube didnt work..So switched to HD2 skin and youtube works ...and skin is faster.
For other IPTV channels, I used this post
Updating IPTV Channels
I didnt need to update my bootcode but if u need to, heres how
Updating bootcode
So folks, get the max from your R1 and convert your old TVs to "Smart" TVs ..
