BDP: 2 better than 1?

I have mentioned this problem in my previous posts and now as the time draws near to buy my BDP, I was given this intriguing idea by a fellow shopper on Amazon.

I have a large collection of DVDs with all possible regions (1-6). I have started buying selected BDs taking care to go for region free as far as possible. I hit a roadblock last month.

First was Disney/Pixar's Up which is region B/C.

Then I got my most desired Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood Pt.1 & 2 which I thought was region free after extensive internet research. But they turned out to be region A/B which apparently qualifies as region free to the Americans

Then I get the "happy news" that Funimation will be releasing/released the remaining 3 parts as region A only

I was thinking of getting a proper BD player (maybe Oppo?) and maybe hardware mod to make it fully region free than I was suggested this :
Why not buy 2 separate BDPs one region A and one region C?

So maybe I can buy the Sony S370 (10k) which will take care region free/C BDs and all my SD DVDs and then maybe get one more region A BDP from amazon/aramex etc.

Won't that be cheaper on the whole?

So could one of the gurus suggest an good region A BDP which would run on our 220/240 V AC?

Another alternative is Dune HD Max which is a Media Player and it also has a BD Rom which plays all region Blu Rays and Dvds.

I also have about 2 TB of videos on ext hdd (mainly non HD) all NTFS, would it be compatible?

You should actually look at 3 BD players to cover all the regions. Even at 10K each, you are looking at at least 30K. That is certainly a better option then spending 30-40K on a single player. Only question will be how will you connect all three players?

I am thinking A & C as C is local and A since I order from Amazon.com

But nobody has suggested a Region A BDP compatible with 220V?!

PS don't most AVRs nowadays have multiple HDMI inputs?

What about that Onida BD unit? Isn't that supposed to be region hackable for BD?

dun bother about 220/240 V AC or 110 .. converters are as cheap as 5$ in ebay ,takes upto 100W

I believe Samsung BR Players can EASILY be made region free. Can someone point if I missed something here?

Almost all BD Players can be made region free for regular DVDs with a remote control keypad manoeuvre of varying difficulty depending on the manufacturer. But to make BD region free requires a hardware mod using a simple plug in chip or some amount of soldering both of which will void the warranty.
I believe the Sony S370 comes region free for SD-DVD out of the box. Hence I will make it handle all my SD-DVDs and C/Region Free BDs.

Still waiting to hear about a region A BDP which supports 220V. or maybe just go for a US S370?

The Cost of the player is 36K MRP and after some discounts the deal could be sweetened.
Yes Dune does support NTFS formatted HDDs and will play all those video without any glitch.
Now comes to shipping, we can do so if you bear the shipping charges which should be around 1K.

i do the same myself..

1 have 2 bd players with each system 1 for a region and the other for c.

and yes.. it works out much cheaper than buying a multiregion player.

you could get one of the shippers to ship a us player to you or if anyone is going to singapore or thailand, they could bring back a 220v region A player from there.. (i got greedy and picked one each from sing and thailand on my last trip)

prices from 6k onwards in either place.

the indian players (region c and multiregion dvd) are availabe for 8.5k onwards

this does not cover region b, but imho, it's only in rare cases that you'd want to buy a regionB BD instead of a region A (in fact the region hacking industry is most rampant in eu where they want to play region A disks of movies that are either not available in region b or are more expensive

BTW if you don't mind me picking your brains could you tell me how you sourced your Region A BDPs?

How much did they cost you and do you use a step down?

How is the Xtreamer Pro?

How come you have a HD-HTPC when you have the Xtreamer (2 in fact!)?

I got the A region BDPs on my last trip to Sing / Thailand. both those areas are 220v so you don't need a step down. the BDP 370A cost me 200 sing dollars @ mustaphas (less the gst which I got a refund for). the Pioneer I got from Bangkok from the company showroom at Paragon mall, that was a sweetheart deal which you'll not be able to replicate

i have only 1 xtreamer. i am happy with it, (though it's a bit slow)

I feel nothing to beat a sherwood player in terms of playability, I mean you can use a remote with codes to make it blu ray and DVD region free.n Why have 2 or 3 and clutter up your space? And why buy a converter when we can get multi voltage units?

I bought it with the same idea in mind, so I guess that would serve the purpose mentioned here.

I have it in fact for sale in the sales thread. But I don't have a lot of discs to try it with.

I think for the Sherwood you would have input key codes every time you needed to change the region.

i would suggest you consider buying a good media player + a BD drive ,if sourced from outside you shud get both for under 10k and offcourse additional xternal storage drive
with this you would be well set for all your needs

buying 2 BDP's like what i did isnt a good idea

What problems are you facing exactly with your 2 BDPs?

Also my main problem would running multi region BDs hence I think 2 players would be necessary and all my media (99% non HD) on ext HDDs could be i think directly run thru the BDP/AVR/TV's USB port.

Yes they are multi voltage units. Range 110-240 volts.

The advantage that I see in having a manual entering of codes is that it seems some discs refuse to play in multi blu ray region players (I cant confirm this as like I said before, not too many discs to try!)

Once you match a particular region code to a particular disc, playability issues would be removed


I had seen the same problem during the advent of DVD players, for example Sony DVD players would not play Sony Columbia Tristar DVD movies!!!

They solved it much later! So I am quite sure there may be some similar problems with the blu ray players, but then this is my opinion

eventually the decision you make should be based on your unique needs.

speaking for myself, I need a Region A player because i purchase most of my BDs from the US. I also need region C because to play BD rentals in India (some are not multiregion)

I have an HTPC, which is the answer to all problems. but it's a bit cumbersome to use and control, so I use it to upscale DVDs and to mostly play the HD-DVDs that I have.

using a media player could be a solution (an almost ideal one, if you plan to copy BDs that you borrow), but there's an added step of copying to disc if it is for BDs that you own..

absolutely no problems with the 2 players but its a total waste

1) Reg c Bd's are very rare
2) reg coding of the bd's/dvd's could be removed if you have a BD drive and stored on to a HDD from which u could play thro media player in your HT-----so i dont see the point of owning 2 BDP :lol:
