Hey,
I am completely lost with this unlocking region codes in DVD and BD players. May be someone can help me out here.

There are a couple of BD players I looked at Denon BDP1610 (33k) and Panny BD60 (14k). The seller told me that he can unlock them for me without openning the player's case and all region dvds and bds will play without any issue.

Questions:
1. What is the catch here. I have read so many people having problems with the region code, not unlocking it but issues with firmware upgrades. I will be playing BDs from US as well as India. Is it that easy?
2. Which one should I go for? Is denon so much better as to justify the hugh price difference?
3. Is Sony's new BDP for 10k as good as panny one?

Also, I have purchased Denon 1910 as my AVR and short listed Missions as my speakers.
I got the following final price on them, can someone confirm if they are good:
Mission M35i 38400.00
Mission M3c2i 13200.00
Mission mht-ds 12600.00
Mission ms-10 20500.00
---------------------------
Total 84700.00
---------------------------
Final Price 75000.00

Thanks in advance.

a) buy the Sony, but only if you don't want region unlocking, it's as good as the panasonic, and much quicker...plus you'll get bill and warranty. don't bother with the Denon.

b) you can't permanently region unlock these BDPs without a hardware mod. The Sony is not amenable to it AFAIK while the panasonic is. The panasonic will require you to order a mod-chip and have it soldered onto the board.

You mean so say that sony one does not require unloacking and all regins BDs can be played on it?

The Sony BDP which you will buy from India will be region locked to C for BDs and region 5 for DVDs so if you will be sourcing your BDs from US then look at Panasonic or Pioneer players which supports region unlocking with the help of Hardware mod kits soldered inside the player. Or else you could buy Dune HD avaliable for 36K with Bill and warranty and its region free for both BDs as well as DVDs, also it is a full fledged media player with support for MKV and other HD formats.

I got the price quote for Dune blue ray player with 500 GB hard disk
Model no.BD PRIME3.0 of 39K without bargaining. I guess I can get it for 36.

Let me do some research on advantages of media players v/s BDP and see if coughing so much is worth it. I can afford it as I really liked Mission speakers which are much cheaper than Dali which I had originally liked. Heard wharfedales 9 and 10 series, and even Evo but did not like them much.

Thanks.

U can consider Oppo-80/83-modded for playing all region Blu ray discs / DVD's and value for money too and can enhance the value for the speakers too which you are inclined.

Unless one buys lots of Blu ray discs ,paying a 25k premium for region free isn't worth it.

True. I don't plan to buy too many BDs right now, may be 10-15. But won't buy a dvd going forward and just BDs. The difference in sound and video is hugh between BD and DVD. And though BDs are expensive now they will get cheaper.
