I need to know if there are any Blu-Ray Players which MKV files from an external Hard disk, via USB. As most BD Players already come with USB ports, and they do have processors fast enough to play HD content, I don't see as why this can't be possible.
Please let me know if any of you do have any knowledge about it...:)

all three mentioned above (oppo, lg, jvc) can play mkv from usb. I have jvc and it plays fine from a pen drive.
Couple of things to remember. If you plan to use a hdd with usb, it should be a self powered one, not powered by the usb port (should have its own power supply and connection etc). Also, most of the players cannot play from ntfs partition, only fat32 partition as microsoft charges fees for using ntfs. I believe only the lg390 can play from ntfs hdd, but please confirm before u buy.

Can the prices also be shared for the Oppo/JVC/LG, etc that play mkv files...

Thanks!

And problem is that with only FAT32 support you can't have files bigger than 4GB :-( .And that reminds me, can someone please please refer me to some good splitters which can split mkv's to smaller than 4GB sized files?

you can use "mkvmerge gui". its pretty straight forward.

Thanks guys. This looks like the ultimate media solution, as I was never in the favour of buying a blu ray player and a media player like WD TV etc. Thanks a ton. I'll be deciding on blu ray player in a month or so and will make sure it plays mkv, as tht forms a large chunk of my collection. Thanks a ton!

For the time being I use my laptop to watch HD movies on my 50" plasma. Btw, I have a decent temporary solution. I found this software at www.vectir.com. I use my mobile phone as a remote to control my laptop via bluetooth/wifi. The software is great, with plenty of options for different media players. However, it's not free .

A dedicated media player cannot be compared to a BR player that plays MKVs........lots of restrictions.....like NTFS, Not been able to use self powered USB drive.............to name a few......

Boilsoft Video Splitter works for practically all video formatts like a charm.....

EDIT :: Not sure if it supports the MKV container though.......sorry!!

EDIT 2 :: just checked it does nto support MKV.

Looks like mkvmerge-gui is the solution but you must know where the keyframe is, else might end up with A/V Sync issue.....

EDIT 3 :: Now Since you have brought this, I dug further and found couple of solutions.....

Ultra Video Splitter ............ I tried this good one, splits MKV but the out put container does not support MKV (strange) you got to choose AVI or MP4 etc......

other one is mkv2vob I havent tried this but reading the guide seems to be a better option, try this one.

search for mobile witch doctor on web, its free and works fine with bluetooth

Get a Bluray player and an Xtreamer. Best of both worlds. No bluray player is good enough to support all formats/file-systems flawlessly.

you are right regarding the blue ray player not supporting all formats.. im getting a spotty reproduction of mkv files on oppo . Seems there is a problem regarding this

I dont seem to have any problem with mkv files on the Oppo. I checked yesterday after downloading a sample and seemed fine. BTW, the current (beta) firmware has better mkv handling.

Although in general, the bdp updates would be limited to once in 3-6 months. So, using an xtreamer or similar devices will give you more flexibility in handling different media files.

You could probably use even a software based media server instead of xtreamer as an DLNA server and send it to your dlna bdp so that you overcome all codec and file partition limitations.
