Panasonic BDT 220- Issues with bright red

Hi,

I just had a question for the BDT 220/ Blu ray users on this forum. Whenever I play a rip through the BDT220, I notice that there are a few subtle horizontal lines on the color red. This does not happen on every shade of red but particularly noticeable on red/ orange neon signs in movies or red tail lights of cars.
This became noticeable last night when watching the new movie - "Dredd" which has a lot of red in an otherwise dull color theme. In aciton scenes which involve blood, this is not noticed.

I immediately played the same file through the HDMI out of my laptop and the horizontal lines were absent.

What this tells me is that:
1. the HDMI cable is good
2. there is no problem with the Epson PJ (thankfully)
3. there is no problem with the rip

Also while watching 3D movies such as Amazing Spiderman, I didnt notice this the previous day- the red on Spidy's suit looked proper red.

This was also noticed when I played the Bourne Legacy. In the initial scenes, there is a bright red jacket which the protagonist is wearing. I could make out those lines on the jacket.

When I click on the "Info" tab on the PJ it tells me that the only difference between the input signal from the laptop and from the BDT220 is the presence of Deep Color 12 bit from the BDT220.

So I tried switching this off on the player but I can still notice the horizontal lines.

Has anyone faced this and what is the solution ?

Btw I also tried changing the Advanced Chroma setting, the Super resolution setting, the HDMI color output settings from 4:4:4, 4:2:2, RGB & RGB Advanced mode.

I just finished watching 'Revenge of the Sith' (again). I was trying to concentrate on the scenes when spaceships chase each other. I did not see trails or horizontal lines. I was watching the original BD.

Is this because of the player being from the US with different operating frequency?

But I doubt that... Am I being cautious... as I've already committed.

Could you try with more videos where you have the colour in RED... and reply.

In what format the movies are? Whether they are downloaded BD Rips from Internet?

These horizontal lines are common in movie rips downloaded from Internet. They have lesser bit rate and low resolution, so they will be less in quality. So, its normal the rich colors will not display correctly. Don't compare them with original Blu-ray Disks.

I watched the Dark Knight Rises & Imax The Serengeti today. Seems like a rip problem to me since didnt notice the red problem in the Dark Knight Rises nor Imax Serengeti.
However what still surprises me is why the problem only with Red ?
Why not blue/ green ? Is there any rationale behind red in low bit rate films ?
Btw the rips with these problems were 1080p rips.

Hi,

I would suggest few things. You can create some synthetic images using paint brush in Windows.

* Please create a Jpeg image of resoltion 1920x1080 full RED Color and save it as jpeg.
* Copy the jpeg file into USB.
* Plug it in BDT220 and view the jpeg images using HDMI and display on to TV.
* Observe any change in red color.
* Similar experiments can be done for Green and Blue.

This will isolate any issue with the BDT player or is it with the content.

Please let me know the results.
