Best sealed subwoofer for the money

After having spent over a year with a Martin Logan Dynamo which is a 10" sealed design with 200 watts power, in my mind there is no debate which is design is better - ported vs sealed. Ported designs may be more efficient and louder but the sealed designs have better control and are more than adequate for the typical apartment home.

Given this context, I would like some suggestions on the best sealed subs currently available. If you have first hand experience, a brief listening impression would be fantastic. If you can provide details of pricing, even better.

As already mentioned, I am sold on Martin Logan subwoofers. Is there a dealer in Bangalore?

Hi,

One of the forum member posted few months back that he may sell his martin logan subwoofers and if I am right, he quoted some where around 1 +. His name is manoj. Pl. get in touch with him.

Sunfire subwoofers are good, I liked it. Jallal, Palani center at GN Chetty, chennai is the right person for sunfire subwoofers

Sub enclosures using passive radiators also are very good. I have two of them one with dual PRs, another with a single PR. I dont know if there are commercial subs with PRs, though.

Efficiency, etc., wise, horn loaded subs would be way up there, but then seeing your other thread, u already know that, esp when u say 'apartment'.

I have a 10" System Audio SE 200 Subwoofer which I'm using in sealed mode & I found the bass very musical & tight. It's costing around a Lac in Mumbai:mad:

The Velodyne SPL Series (Sealed) are also very good.

There are good reviews on SVS SB12-NSD - price is around 46k
(I don't have first hand experience)

I am planning buy SVS PB12-NSD

REL ST Series, MJ acoustics and Vandersteen 2W subs are some of the best ican think of for Audio which have sealed box..i will rate the vandersteens as the best.

Omega deep hemp seems to be very good but is limited to 30 Hz or around

BK elec is an OEM for MJ and REL who also has a good collection.

paradigm has some great Servo subs other than velodyne and SVS.

AFAIK, THE "Best sealed subwoofer for the money"ought to be a DIY or semi DIY/custom design with nothing less than a 15" down-firing driver in a sealed cabinet. If you go any lower you will have to go for a ported design as the norm is. A ported design means you'll have to hear and contend with undesirable port noise. Also, see if you can have the amp outside the cabinet for enhanced life of the amp. A class D amp works fine for a sub. Costs less and doesnt get too hot either. Just my two phooti kaudis.

Rythmik Sub? Rings a bell. PM Shershah, he was doing a DIY sub build.

@Trittya, AFAIK, the bigger the driver, the slower it would be; Laws of physics you see. In addition, due to room accoustics, there would be null points and those where there would be considerable boom. I physically experienced at musicmaya's place. I also had aone-to-one interaction with Goldyrathore a couple of months ago who is into DIY majorly though his forte is 'Line Array speakers'

What he said which I also feel right is, you need to have multiple subs of smaller dimensions; a couple if not few, subs having 8" drivers to have a fast sub with tight LF with uniform dispersion.

I'm open for discussion on what I stated, I don't mind being proven right or wrong;)

OK I have finally decided to go in for a sealed sub.

After a few days of searching and re-searching, here is my wishlist for what I am looking for subjectively :licklips:

1a. Musicality
2a. Tight
3a. Resolving
4a. Articulate and Agile
5a. Integration with fullrangers - add subtle body, mellowness and warmth on upper bass harmonics around 120 to 240hz. My speakers are thin sounding :(
6a. Not produce more bass but fill the room with lower harmonics. I dont want thuds and pounding sound.
7a. Invisible - I don't want to hear the sub, but its absence should be felt when switched off.
8a. Punch and Slam

What I am looking for practically :licklips:

1b. Dynamic power and bass transient capability in low 30 to 60hz and mid-bass 60 to 120hz ( see 8a above). Resonance of previous note should not overlap next transient (2a 3a 4a).
2b. Speaker level inputs (5a for better integration with FRs) + 0.1 LFE input
3b. Capable of 30hz @100dB without compulsory corner placement (optional and speculative). I will not be playing loud, but the human ears hearing (lowest) threshold curve rises at about 18dB/octave from 50Hz to 20Hz. At 20Hz, an 85dB SPL is barely audible in an average room.
4b. 12dB to 18dB per octave slope not 24 - for the low pass filter. Hopefully this will not create a sucked out frequency hole with abrupt cut-off of upper harmonics (for 5a above)
5b. Very very fast upper bass in 120 to 240hz range. i.e while the cross over will be set much lower, the upper octave harmonics (12db lower) albeit at barely audible volumes should not be more sluggish than the speedy fostex drivers (for 4a and 5a above)
6b. Phase angle switch (continuously variable is optional)

Application is 80% Music 10% movies.

Did I miss anything? :licklips:

I have actually narrowed down my choice to REL T5 as the most promising AND possibly affordable-with-a-streeeeetchhhhhh!
If you research a bit, REL products have the design focus of integrating with wideband drivers. They will probably not excel for explosions and machine gun type of noises over other HT subs (maybe some models do at thrice the price?). Hence the choice. But I will really have to loosen my Naada er.. purse strings for that to happen

Therefore I want to consider other more affordable choices and if possible DEMO them over this immediate weekend (I move fast .. like Phantom, Gobble-who-walks :ohyeah:).

Would like some tips about
1. What might fulfill the promise the best
2. Where I can demo them
3. What highly rated HT/Movies subwoofer product I can demo even if it will not meet my wish list, to understand WHY not to buy certain budget gear

Edit : The keyword is Integration with the fullrangers. Everything else I can compromise on more than on this one requirement ... the added low frequency harmonics should appear to come from the 2 speakers not the sub.

I didn't want to open a new thread and contribute to spawning the runaway threads syndrome. So lets keep it all in the old thread here.

Any tips, suggestions guys?

Edit: Oh! the budget - 25K approx. (the REL is +1.5x times that price). @25K my pajamas will stay at my waist. Else the loosen'd Naada .. er purse strings will have unimaginable consequences. ;)

If you find one with all the details mentioned above, let me know - we can take the dealership , start a showroom in bangalore and make a fortune... :)

Seriously , I am interested to know if there is such a SUB in that pricing.

Thanks to you for this post :clapping: .

Whoa! No crime in wishing is it? :ohyeah:

You mean all that time could have been better spent in fantasizing about girls instead? :licklips: :o

Just give me suggestions about what to demo (girls included). I will take care of the expectations!! ;)
In either case simply fantasizing never gets anyone anything - neither the gals nor the sub!! :ohyeah: :D So I will end up choosing something practically anyways.

How is the Polk 125?

I have read some good reviews about polk dsw pro 660. Might have to loosen up the nada little bit though.

Yes, what about application of the balance 10%

Well ... be prepared for a totally different movie watching experience!! Where one may close his/her eyes lulled by the harmonious sound of explosions ... The Rat-Tat-Tat of a machine gun aimed at you, may sound sweet, melodious and musical to the ears... Sigh! :)
