Best way to down-mix 5.1 to Stero in HTPC

Hi

I have HTPC connected to two channel DAC which feeds the two channel stero AMP. It sounds good for all the music with foo-bar WASAPI bitperfect .

However for the movies , i feel it really lacks the impact . I am using AC3 Filter with the Media play home cinema classic , but still not happy with it .

Any alternative for this . Also tried JRiver SW player , but the result is same as the AC3Filter.

I used to have Denon AVR , which used to downmix to stero ( which was lot better ) . I could not figure out how to do that in Software properly

I think you can use the XBMC to downmix to stereo in its Audio settings. Just check it out.

I think if you play with VLC, it lets you select stereo as output. Also how about the sound card / on board sound's utility, should not that have a similar option?
But then if you have a USB DAC, the option of sound card does not really apply.

all most all media players and the windows sound settings let you choose the speaker configuration. Choose two channel stereo and windows/Media player will automatically downmix to stereo

Soundcard can downmix better than software.My xonar does well than vlc.

Soundcard can downmix better than software.My xonar does well than vlc.

What i heard is DTS/Dolby files contain the information about the level of each channel while downmixing , but if the decoded stream goes to the soundcard , the information is already lost and the sound card does not know how to mix ( may be it uses a std matrix )

I have the On board sound from motherbroad , let me try to see if that makes a difference

I select 5.1 audio in vlc & 2ch input in soundcard.There SC does downmixing where vlc is decoding to 5.1.Other option is withing vlc to select stereo which sounds inferior.
