Thank you @arj

are MTB's suitable for city riding ?

I mean cycling around the apartment block and running small errands - not into long distance or group cycling...

or are hybrids better ?

and are gears really necessary for city riding ?

i was wondering if some good deals can be had on a website for pre loved cycling gear

would you know of any ?

for upto 5 kms..you dont need gears unless there are sharp gradients eg even the flyovers can be tough without gears. in that case a Hybrid is more than enough. MTBs are quite good for city riding if you go to the outskirts villages else a hybrid is enough...check this -

In this price range better to not go for used unless its someone you know.

Advantage of Decathalon is they have a service center as well.

I came across Frog Cycles...

Hope it's Made in India

The Decathlon one sent by @arj is economical too..

Having used a BSA Deluxe type of bicycle in my younger days and having travelled on it lots...I think not having a gear facility helps build leg muscles and lungs...

Those days my parents got me the BSA Deluxe and not the BSA Mach 1 ( which I lusted after) as they liked the carrier on the bicycle and it's hardiness...

The BSA Mach 1 was costlier and showy too and had gears as an option.

Is there any equivalent to that today?

:-))

Decathlon is the best bet. They have side variety. They are helpful in choosing the right one and good after sales service.

Hi,
If you have strict budget of 12-15K, then better to go for used one. You will get better deals(many IT people in bangalore purchase costly cycles and then stop using it after 2-3 months. they eventualy sell within 1 year because of various reason).

Without Gear: Not recommended for beginners. Better to go with Gears. Leg muscles will get build anyway. With Gear, you will not get tired if u want to go for long distance(more than 5-6 km). Purpose of gear is to keep our rotating speed constant in case of steep climb etc etc.
BSA Deluxe etc: Old cycles were heavy. Current cycles are very light weight. With same amount of energy, you can travel long distance. Current cycles are designed to work for months without giving any issues. Hence costly.

Go through this link for more details about bicycle. If we read more, then we can appreciate why bicycle are costly and what we are getting after spending extra. Frame is the most important component. Shock-up are not needed for city ride. It eats our energy. Good Frame and knee/legs can absort most of the city bumps.

this is what i was looking at - most of my audio gear in the past are used but EX condition and at a great price too !

My budget is fixed max 15k - its for my teenage daughter she is 15 and tall for her age so looking at 27.5 or 29 size maybe

She doesnt like distinctly "pinky and girly "bicycles so it will be a Unisex bicycle for her

with a fixed budget of 15K i cannot hope to get a bike in the used market costing more than Rs 30K
( which the owner must have paid when new )

There is no thread for bicycles on this forum and so i thought of starting something...

maybe members can show their bicycles !

Leg muscles will get build anyway

for shorter distances in my city i see no bridges around here and so i think un-geared will fit my use and besides its easy to maintain as well i am thinking.

audiophiles take care of equipment..owners of bikes at that range do not :)

you can check out some more brands here as well -https://www.choosemybicycle.com/en/bicycles/hybrid

But for the frame quality and weight being very important and or the price your best bet is decathalon. my daughter does ride a Decathalon MTB..although i do have a hybrid and a road bike which i use on weekends. These days i do use my road bike for some city runs as well with no issues.

For equipment, the Must have is a helmet..having survived a simple fall, always insist on one. a glove is recommended as it reduces shock and also prevents scrapes on the hand if you do fall..

Hi @oldmonk https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07G31J2Y1/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_awdo_t1_FxelFbJQB2849
Check this out in amazon. Recently my friend has bought for his sis and pretty happy with it.

Thanks
Thank you...

I was out in the market yesterday and the usually busy and buzzing with activity cycle shops had a deserted look with hardly any customers.

The owner mentioned that all cycle factories are closed due to the China Virus situation.

Previously they could place order on the factory as per customer need but now they take what models the factory gives them.

Hopefully by December their business will get better.

As such online bicycle sales and ready to assemble bicycles seem to have chipped away at their market share.

Decathlon cycles are of good quality. They also provide all accessories and can service the bikes.
Do evaluate your exact requirements - whether you require gears? if yes then do you require 21 gears? do you require disc brakes? (V brakes are good enough), do you require shocks (rear shocks are a strict no-no) etc. Thick tyres or thin tyres (fatter tyres require more energy to pedal but do provide cushioning), Steel vs Alloy / aluminum frame (steel is more flexible but is prone to rust)
Buy only post deciding on all the above factors to narrow your choice.

hi,
Got your requirement. you can visit decathlon once. they will ans all your queries. also you can check the exact size needed for your daughter after trying multiple sizes there. now a days gear dont give much issues. but you can decide. generally teenagers like gear cycles as all their peers will have one with gear.

Finally got the Schnell 29 ER ..the model without gear...without disc breaks...normal breaks with front shocks.

The shop was crowded so we made a quick choice and waited outside whilst the cycle was assembled

Cost Rs 11k

It looks like this...almost

Thank you all..

I hope this thread continued as cycling is an interesting sport...and great for the body.

Ride safe

Eventually the joy of cycling is supreme and more important than the technical stuff like gears, disc brakes etc.
Do ensure that you invest in some safety equipment like helmet, blinkers and some kind of neon addition on clothing to make the rider very visible in the night.
