Hi , can anyone help me suggesting which one is better in between blu ray player and media player, is today blu ray players are capable of playing all formats i usually watch downloaded movies from torrent, or does bluray players support external hardisk too.

If you download videos from internet then I think you will be better off with a Media player. Media Player is more versatile than Bluray player in case of downloaded files.

While bdps will play most of the download files, there can be some files that are not playable like flv. So it is always better to get a media player. Another advantage is that you scan all your media files and access them instantly. Some media players support built-in hdd for storing your media collection.

Yes,I convert them to avi OR mkv & watch on BDp.

I would go with blu ray player from a reputed locally available brand that can also playback files through USB (from external hard disk). Prices are more or less similar to Media players, and you also get advantage of being able to play Blu Ray discs. Plus after sales support is generally better as the general BDP brands (Samsung, LG, Sony, Philips) are mostly established with good service presence.
On the other hand, Media players may be more energy efficient, have more user community hacks and downloadable firmware updates for the more established names, and play additional file formats though USB. All the best for your purchase.

I have used both bdp and media player and found media player more easy to use. With bdp I always had to convert some files to another format which any way is cumbersome. Later I migrated to htpc. Peace of mind. No more worries about file format or playback issues.

Edit - there are some media players with bd drive like kaiboer kli750, dune etc. These are region free also, but are expensive.

am having Htpc currently but i think it consume more power as compare to bd or media player.

well for a less budget a media player is good..for over 10k budget a bdp is future proof if someday a blu ray disk is played...sacrifising some files not being played...

I have all 3... WDTV, HTPC, PS3, and a Blu-ray player and I use the Blu-ray player the most. The PQ of the Blu-ray player is the best and the HTPC is on par with some tweaking, but it gets hot and also consumes more power.

If you can burn DVDs then nothing like a Blu-ray player, if you want the best PQ then again a Blu-ray player. If you just want to collect files and watch then a media player or HTPC are the best in terms of convenience + features.

I would however rate the media player the last... a Blu-ray player, HTPC offer more functionality and better PQ any day.

yes i also think so...my main point is the future proofness if anyday if someone wants to rent or buy a br disk.....and about file play lets sacrifice 10 percent of the total files not to be played in blu ray player...

.

+1 to that.I copy files on HDD & BDp reads via USB,even plays Bluray copies perfectly. So very little use of my HTPC.

thanksball for your valuable inputs,is there any specific Bd player which can play almost all formats with external hardisk support up to 2tb or sony ,samsung can do it for me please suggest.

Also Is there any Media player which would output Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA apart from playing all kind of video files? Just thinking of getting something on Black Friday deal.

I trawled through most of the hifimart.com website but can't seem to find the blu ray rental link. Or maybe I am just going blind from watching too much SD on the new TV.
