35k is plenty of money. Forget the Sony and the Bose. Try this combination.
Cambridge Audio DV99 source (plays DVDs, DixX, has a USB stick, and plays VCDs and MP3s with a hack) - 14k
Topping TP20 amplifier - 4k (bought from ebay)
Cambridge Audio S30 speakers - 8k
Total cost - 26k. Spend 5k on some nice stands for the speakers, and you've spent 31k and you've probably got yourself one of the best stereo setups you can get for the money. As a bonus you get an excellent upscaling DVD player also
Disclaimer: I have not heard these components together, but I've heard them individually in different contexts, and they sound like they would work very well, the CA DV99's little brother the DV89 I've heard with a Topping powering Jamo speakers, and they worked a treat. the DV99 is a very good CD player for the money, on par with the Oppo 980/983. The Topping TP20 is at least as good as many budget amps costing between 15-20k and above, from waht I've heard, and the Cambridge Audio S30 is an excellent pair of bookshelves for the money.
If you can audition this combo, nothing like it. But even without, I think it's a pretty good combination to go for.
Points to note: The Topping amp does not have a remote control, but the DV99 does, and it has a volume control also built in, although this is probably not optimal from a sound quality perspective, it's usable.
