Buiding a Home Theatre - From Scratch

BTW, your side speakers look very close to your rear speakers. Can you move the side speakers so that they are directly to the sides of the listening seat, or even slightly forward of the listening area?

Do you mean the side surrounds of the seating? Well I think i can't move them any further since the mounts are drilled to the wall and the wall is cement brick.

i also felt the same way that the seperation of the rear speakers are not too much !

Is it possible that the rears can be moved behind the listening position by placing them on speaker stands?

Not sure what "surrounds of the seating" are, but I was talking about speakers.

You have two sets of surround speakers. One pair of surround speakers should go behind your listening position. The second pair of surround speakers should go at your sides.

No sense putting the second pair of surround speakers behind your listening position since you already have a pair of surround speakers behind you.

Yes I have one set of surrounds mounted to the sides of the listening position and the second set mounted at the corners of the room since I have a big window behind the seating. I could not locate the second set of surrounds behind and so located at the corners.

I think I need to shift them behind the seating position by placing on speaker stands.

Seatiing from back wall is 3 ft - It is not a wall it is a big window.
In that case, I would keep one pair of surrounds in the back corners and move the other pair of surrounds up front to use as height speakers. Currently your side speakers and rear speakers are so close to each other that there isn't much meaningful separation between them.

Do you have any space above the window to mount the speakers? You can try that, if there is.

That means I will be able to use only 5.1 surround and use the 7.1 surrounds as height speakers in the front by the sides of the screen.

Yes it is a good idea! I will explore this if no menaningfull prupose is served with the corner speakers.

Thanks for detailed screen assembly notes. I am not clear if you used the same material for screen which is used for huge posters ? what is that material called? what is the cost of the material?
I am trying to build one screen myself 10x6

That will give you a tall front soundstage.

However, IF you place the heights between the fronts and surrounds (see diagram), mounted as high up as possible, that will give a better impression of height (sounds from above).

Excellent idea. I thought height speakers are mounted vertically above the front speakers! Your sketch shows in a circular format.

Does Dolby PLIIx which uses the height speakers suggest such an arrangement?

Sorry for the confusion. I had used blackout screen cloth bought from Carl's screen website. You can also import the same with duties paid.

I did not use the poster cloth. I had only suggested utilising the services of flexi poster makers to assemble the screen with the frame so that they know how to stretch the cloth without wrinkles. Below is the website link from which I had ordered.

I was able to locate blackout cloth at a regional merchant for around 200 Rs/m. Give a try and checkout in some of your local stores, especially big stores which has a separate section for curtain/carpet etc. If you are from Kerala, try Parthas where I was able to locate it. (My PJ is yet to reach me and hence I didnt buy the blackout cloth yet. So not sure about the quality).

They can be, but that placement will give a taller soundstage.

IF you want a sense of height, then spread the height speakers wide apart and mount them closer to the listening position.

It just shows the angles. You don't have to spread your speakers in a circle, since calibration will take care of that.

No, but PLIIz does. Does your receiver have PLIIz mode?

Is the blackout cloth you mentioned - is cut to length or fixed length and breadth?

Then how much does a 10 x 5 ft cost?

In reply to your question on another thread -

Carl's blackout cloth has two different sides - one with smooth rubber coating and the other side fabric weave. We need to use the rubberised side for projection as per carl's instruction document.

Thanks @rdksrk2013 . The one I saw was 4 feet wide, and can be cut into needed length as they kept it as a roll. My need is for a 4 feet high screen, and this should suffice. Not sure whether they have even wider ones
