Can any Mi Box 4K current users confirm it will output 5.1 (Dolby Digital) via optical out?

So it will work if i have it connected to a tv/monitor (switched off / on standby mode)?

It worked for me without even a HDMI cable in it. I plugged to the TV only to set it up and occasional updates. Since Chromecast Audio was not available when I forayed into wireless audio streaming, MiBox was the only economic substitute I found. Not happy with it though, as it started to freeze occasionally (even with all updates).

Thanks for the response. I was going by Darko's review on this aspect.
Btw, i have found that these boxes work best with the original software versions that they come with. updates only if absolutely necessary. Of course, YMMV.
