Can DVD player such as Sony cause scratches to the DVD/Audio CD ? Though original CDs, if I use them occasionally i.e. once in 4 months or so, sometimes the movie or the auido CD doesn't play properly. Movie DVDs will get stuck at somepoint, I need to eject it , wipe it a bit with a cloth and again play it- Audio CD's the same case.

How to preserve the original Audio/DVDs ?

no, dvd player will not make any scratches to the disc. physically the laser is not touching the rotaing disc.

True.
Handling DVDs/CDs improperly can cause scratches. Dust is a major problem in India. Player brand doens't make much of a difference for dust. If there are dust particles on the disc tray, they can cause scratches when you place or remove a disc.

Dust settling on player laser could also be a problem. Not all players have a dust cover for laser which closes in automatically when a disc stops rotating.

Several years ago I had a Phillips DVD player which resulted in similar problems after an year and went bad progressively in next couple of years. It didn't have dust cover over laser. Later I purchased a Yamaha DVD player, which has been running fine for over 6 years. My Phillips DVD player had ventilation slots which also acted as dust entry points. Yamaha player on the other hand doesn'thave ventilation slots, so it's less vulnerable to dust. I am not sure whether the Yamaha player has dust cover for laser.

Unless it is of very poor quality, a player can never add any physical damage to the CD. Scratches could come because of may reasons:

1. Physical handling. For example, if the CD does not site well inside the jewel case, every time you move the case, the CD will rattly inside and get scratched.

2. Dirt in the player's tray. If there is a lot of dust in the player's tray, they could add to tiny scratches when the CD is played.

3. Carelessness. When we handle CDs, I have seen many people not holding the CD properly. You should never touch the CD surface. Always held it by the edges. In addition, never place the CD by itself on a table or somewhere. When not inside the player, it should only be inside the jewel case.

4. I have seen a number of CD jackets (that hold 50 or 100 CDs) as being the cause for scratches. Every time you remove or insert a CD, you have to use a bit of force. This could add scratches to the CD.

Cheers

Thank you all for your replies. Somehow the original DVDs that we get here in India doesn't work smoothly if I reply after 6 months or so - not sure on the reason though - anyway thanks much for your replies.

DVD players currently provide the closest thing to a high-def DVD experience. Upconverting DVD players don't magically make DVDs high-definition--there's no high-def picture data on the disc--but they scale the available picture to fit HDTV resolutions.

If you dont use DVD/CD for quiet long time, there is all the possibility of fungus formation on the layer. If you are using some CD/DVD after long time, wipe it with soft nice cloth before playing it in the player.

Have bought the LG BD550 Blu-ray player for Rs.6700/-. It now comes along with a HDMI cable. Got it connected (thro the HDMI cable) with the 3300 and played couple of DVD's (Avtar, Mask, Final Destinaton). The audio quality is superb and it is given in the manual that the video would be upscaled but I could not find any difference between the video qulaity of my earlier Philips DVD player and this one. The USB port plays all the files including the mkv, divix. Yet to test it with some blu-ray discs as I need to buy them yet. All in all seems to be a good and cheap blu-ray player for now.
