Hi,

I have this question for quite some time..

The situation is as follows (somewhat hypothetical)-
I do not have a blue ray player.
I have a 5.1 home theater system
I play movies on my TV from USB HDD which have 5.1 audio codes.
My TV and home theater are connected through optical cable.
Can the home theater produce 5.1 sound?

As per the following link from Samsung, it can -

^^ Probably movies with Dolby Digital (AC3) audio will work as most TVs support DD. DTS and AAC are doubtful.

TV does passthrough of the multichannel audio (Dolby or DTS) to your home theatre system which decodes it..

So, what about the new DTS codes? Can we get the full effect using the TV and the Home theatre without using a blue ray player?

Of course it will support both DD and DTS 5.1. Select a SPDIF output as DTS or DD in your TV then only it will send the signal to your HT. Sometimes it will also detect it automatically...
